  1. Plymouth must be the largest place in the country to have no bus services on any of Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year's Day.

    1. Hull is slightly larger and has no buses on any of those three days. Used to have Boxing Day until recently, and has had New Years Day before, but no longer.

    2. Its hardly the largest, but theyre entitled to let staff have time off over xmas and new year to spend time with family.

    3. Anon @ 20:37. Apart from Hull what larger town/city than Plymouth has no bus services on any of the three days? You obviously have a list!

  2. Plymouth citybus certainly taking advantage of fare cap increase. Vast majority of fares from January will be £3 single or £6 return!! Day ticket up to £7, weekly ticket now £28 and 4 weekly just shy of £100. Kids tickets uo lots too...day ticket £5.50 and week ticket £22

    1. All these increases but the service is getting worse and worse, filthy buses, buses breaking down constanly and just a poor service overall. How they think running the 11 two hourly to Liskeard and on single deckers is sensible is beyond me. A fair few people i know have now stopped using the 11 in favour of the half hourly rail service to Plymouth, where you are at least most of the time gurenteed a seat unlike the 11!

    2. Unfortunately, the bus service is only getting worse because of the sheer number of cars on the road - Plymouths road network since Covid times, has seen a 50% increase in traffic, is it any wonder why we're also seeing a mass surge in RTCs across the board. Yes, it's frustrating, but the bus companies are quite literally following Govt Guidance for the fares, it's not just them making these figures up. Hopefully, come April 2025, we'll start to see the new buses entering service, and some increases in punctuality.

    3. The fares thing is nor strictly accurate though as £3 is a cap not the price they gave to charge. First for example across the UK are not charging £3 for every fare with most First ops charging around £2.10 to £2.40 for shorter single journeys of 4 or 5 miles. Stagecoach also seem to be doubg this across England too. Citybus seem to just think £3 cap means they have to charge £3!

    4. I'm just going to also add to that the Citybus are not just charging £3. I think the comms they've put out has been really poor in regards to where a £3 fare applies, especially a return - which most of them, probably wont be £6 either...

    5. To Anonymous 21/12 @10.47 - to be fair, CityBus has said that many passengers will pay less than £3, so little different to First saying they will charge £2.10 or £2.40 for shorter journeys. A lot more single fares up and down the country will now come in somewhere between £2 and £3 whereas previously they were all held down to £2 maximum.

  3. Whilst I agree with letting people off for Christmas and Boxing day, surely some people would like to work it as overtime? Other people on shift have to work Christmas and just get on with it.

    1. Of course. There'd be more than enough volunteers. The lazy notion that everyone wants to spend time off their friends and family is complete nonsense.

  4. Northampton and Cambridge don't have any Christmas or Boxing day services

  5. Were the Boxing Day and New Year services subsidised by the Council? My local buses were but funding was withdrawn at Covid and have never been reinstated. Drivers can always be found for these two days. Not everyone wants to celebrate at these times.

    1. It’s not just drivers that are required. Support staff and engineering are also needed for the buses to run. Stagecoach use to run buses on Boxing Day and obviously made a huge loss for them not to run either.
