There were a few new notices published this last week - but they are all the short notice changes for North Cornwall noted above!

26 March 2019

Cornwall Good news with an old photo

Cornwall in going against the grain here:

Older people, and those of any age with a disability, who qualify for a concessionary bus pass will be able to travel for free at any time on Cornwall’s buses from 01 April.

Up until now, people who qualify for a bus pass under the English National Concessionary Fares Travel Scheme have been able to travel on Cornwall’s public  buses for free after 9.30am on Mondays to Fridays and at any time on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.  Now, Cornwall Council has decided to extend the scheme so that concessionary bus pass holders can travel on public buses at any time and will no longer have to wait until 9.30am to travel for free.

Cornwall Council Cabinet portfolio holder for transport, Geoff Brown said: “We have listened to residents who hold these bus passes.  They have told us that having to wait until 9.30am to be able to travel for free on the bus means that they can’t travel to early appointments.  In the case of disabled concessionary bus pass holders in particular, they have told us that under the current arrangements, they can’t use their pass early enough so they either have to pay or make alternative arrangements to travel to adult training and day centres.”

Geoff adds:  “We want to encourage people to use public transport and here is a practical way the Council can help people who have a concessionary bus pass to do just that at no cost to them.”

https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/council-news-room/media-releases/news-from-2019/news-from-march-2019/have-a-concessionary-bus-pass-you-can-travel-at-any-time-on-cornwall-s-buses-from-01-april/

and the good news continues

Residents in South East Cornwall are set to benefit from a successful bid to the government’s Transforming Cities Fund to improve transport links, with a particular emphasis on sustainable transport.  Cornwall Council joined forces with Plymouth City Council and Saltash Town Council to support and develop a bid for funding to improve the wider Plymouth travel to work area which includes South East Cornwall

The successful funding bid means that South East Cornwall is set to see a £320,000 investment in transport infrastructure to improve key bus corridors in the Saltash, Torpoint, Rame Peninsula and Liskeard areas. Improvements will include new bus shelters, timetable cases and the installation of digital real time passenger information (RTPI) signs at key locations.

Another £516,000 has also been received to deliver walking and cycling improvements in Saltash to provide key connections to Plymouth, support economic and housing growth and manage increased travel demand.

The joint bid sees a total of £7.6 million for a number of sustainable transport initiatives in Plymouth.  In Cornwall, a share of the funding will go to improve cycling, walking and public transport links between Cornwall and Plymouth.

Cornwall Council cabinet portfolio holder for transport Geoff Brown said: “Improving sustainable transport connections in Cornwall and into Devon is so important for our residents.  This funding will help us deliver work being carried out on this Council’s One Public Transport System for Cornwall (OPTSfC) Project which aims to deliver an integrated and customer focused transport network under the Cornwall Devolution Deal.”

Cornwall Council is now working closely with Plymouth City Council in preparing a bid for the second round of funding.

This last story was such good news that the council tweeted: Annotation 2019-03-24 150239

Clearly whoever was in charge of this post hasn't actually used a bus in Cornwall for some time! (this photo was one of mine from  June 2009! https://flic.kr/p/6DfvRz)

National Express 315 cutback

National Express have announced changes to their 315 service which sees it being severely truncated from the current Helston - Eastbourne run along the south coast. It now only runs from Plymouth to Bournemouth so longer runs will involve at least one change of coach, or more if coming up from Cornwall.

As Peter Murnaghan puts it The journey length is a hefty 13.5 hours from Helston (dep 0650) through to Eastbourne (arr 2020), for a fare of £65.  I doubt that many passengers travel from end to end on this marathon

The firm is cutting the Cornish part of its 315 service between Helston to Eastbourne. The route also takes in stops across Cornwall including Falmouth, Penryn, Truro, St Austell and Liskeard. However, the company said it was cutting the route, which will in future only start at Plymouth. Passengers coming back into Cornwall would have to change at Plymouth for alternative services to Penzance.

The move is a blow for Helston, and other places not on the railway line, although two other National Express services will continue to serve the town. It does mean however that there will be less flexibility for passengers.

A spokeswoman for National Express said: “After a detailed review of our services we found that areas west of Plymouth were simply not viable, and as a result the decision was made to cease the 315 service as of April 1

https://www.cornwalllive.com/news/cornwall-news/national-express-coach-company-axes-2617344

Cornwall Live then published a story with the headline

National Express cuts 315 service to Helston and leaves travellers heartbroken

which they illustrated by choosing several quotes from passengers who seemed more non-plussed than heatbroken!

“Although bad news, totally understandable and proof that if you don't use it, you lose it. I only wish we had reason to use it more because they are a very good company. Such is the price of growing old with old friends and relatives. We should have used it more!”

I used to use this a lot when I travelled to Portsmouth, although its been many years since my last trip. It was always handy not to have to change coaches.

There has been one other news story involving a National Express coach out of Plymouth:

A man and a woman have been arrested following claims they were having sex on a coach in public. The National Express bus had been travelling along the M5 near Cullompton at 22:40 GMT on Monday when officers were called. The pair, a 29-year-old Bristol man and a 32-year-old woman from Barnstaple, were arrested on suspicion of an act of outraging public decency. The suspects were later released under investigation.National Express said in a statement it was "aware of an alleged incident" on board a bus travelling between Blackpool and Plymouth. The firm added it would "assist the police with any investigation"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-47535957 Annotation 2019-03-24 144007

https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/weird-news/bus-romp-arrests-after-randy-14120091

You do wonder if the story has been exaggerated somewhat as the couple were later released without charge after Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police have reviewed CCTV footage supplied by the bus company in relation to this allegation. "The footage is inconclusive, and therefore no further policing action will be taken into this matter."

It probably wouldn't have happened on a coach to Eastbourne!
