In The News
Angry Parents
PARENTS "annoyed" by planned changes to a bus service which will make getting their children to school on time more difficult have started an online petition. Parents in East-the-Water have started the petition after plans were announced to axe a bus route used by many to get their children to school. The 21/21a service between Ilfracombe, Barnstaple, Bideford, Westward Ho! and Appledore has been split into two routes.
As a concerned parent of an Appledore Primary School pupil, Stephanie Shaddick, explained: "The new number 19 service is not going to have an 8:30am service going in either direction which means any parents that use the bus will not be able to get their children to school.

Filers 300 Cutbacks
CONCERNS have been raised over the impact of council cuts following the cancellation of an important Lyn Valley bus service. Filers Travel has confirmed the end of its 300 service which has traditionally run between Ilfracombe and Minehead, passing through the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth. The bus service has been under threat since Devon County Council announced last year it was to withdraw funding for the route.

Save the Ide Gap
Campaigners have expressed more concerns about a planned new park and ride scheme on the rural edge of Exeter. Devon County Council want to build the £6m facility with 556 car parking spaces at Round Field next to the A30/A377 interchange near Ide. Campaign group Save the Ide Gap want to preserve the space between the village and Exeter.Members are concerned about potential the “urbanisation” of the green land and fear the scheme will eventually result in the village being “swallowed-up” by Exeter.

The comment under the Appledore article suggests that there is a bus at the disputed time. It's a shame that the paper couldn't get a comment from Stagecoach. If that's the case, it's all a complete waste of everybody's time. It does, however, show the pointlessness of petitions for such complaints - 150 people signing for the reinstatement of one bus journey. Clearly they're not all using it, or there would be duplicate buses running, so what is Stagecoach (or anyone) supposed to take from that?!
ReplyDeleteSo the service from Exeter to Sidmouth is changing from 52 back to the old Devon General number of 9. Bit by bit, the old Devon General numbers are coming back - so far we have 2 (Newton Abbot vis the coast), 4 (Honiton and Axminster), 5 (Crediton and onwards - although the historical number for Crediton was 7), 6 (Okehampton and onwards), 9 (Sidmouth), 12 (NA - Torquay - Brixham) - so maybe the Tiverton service will become 3 and possibly Cullompton 27, with 10 for Exmouth to Sidmouth.
ReplyDeleteHow about Stagecoach doing the same for Plymouth and bringing back the 83 and the 93?
I suspect it's a much to do with using 'nicer' numbers and easy to remember single-digit ones as it is to bringing back traditional DG numbers. 9 is easier to remember than 52 and 2 is easier to remember than 85 etc. Probably why they made a point of using 1 and 3 in Plymouth rather than 83 and 93.
DeleteCrediton was 5 from the early 60s at least. That's going to mean something to a lot more people than 7 would have done, so I can see why they opted for 5.
Interesting to see the reintroduction of yet another "traditional" Devon General number, 9 for the Exeter-Sidmouth corridor.
ReplyDeleteAlso interesting that there seems to be a separate 9a Seaton-Lyme Regis service registered - although I suspect in practice this will be part of a through service to and from from Exeter. I wonder if this means that First's X53 will finally be withdrawn between Axminster and Exeter, and if there will be changes to Axe Valley Travel services in the area?
No, the X53 is being split into sections which will include an X52 Bridport/Seaton/Exeter. Poole/Weymouth becomes X54 and Axminster/Bridport/Dorchester X51. Weymouth/Bridport stays as X53.
DeleteCan anyone say when and where the timetable for the new 9A Lyme Regis service will be available?
