Orange Army

Network Rail's 300-strong 'Orange Army' engineers who worked to rebuild the Dawlish railway line after the ferocious winter storms in 2014 have scooped a prestigious award.

The team won the Outstanding Contribution Award at the recent Devon Tourism Awards. Network Rail and Amco Rail's orange army received the award at a glittering ceremony at Plymouth's Holiday Inn on the Hoe, hosted by radio and TV presenter, Judi Spiers.

The team was praised for repairing Dawlish railway line ahead of schedule.

Stagecoach 12

AS plans are being finalised for reversing of traffic system in and out of Torquay, concerns have been voiced about proposed changes to stops for the Bay's busiest bus. Cllr Darling said: "I'm extremely concerned about the impact this will have on the elderly disabled, mothers with young children and prams along with those with mobility difficulties who are unable or find it difficult to walk up to the nearest stop on Abbey Road.

"I am also aware that traders around Castle Circus are also concerned that this will impact on their businesses as they will lose passing trade. According to proposed Stagecoach route plans, the number 12 bus will now come up Abbey Road and continue past the old B&Q building towards the police station. Therefore anyone in Castle Circus or using the facilities at the top end of the town, including the library, job centre, Council Offices, Post Offices, and shops, will no longer be able to catch a bus without having to walk up this steep hill."

A Stagecoach spokesperson said: "Due to the implementation of Torbay Council's new one way system it will not be possible for the 12 to continue on its present route.

"During the consultation phase of this project we explained this impact in some detail and that it would require a substantial, lengthy and circuitous diversion to serve Castle Circus on services towards Newton Abbot.

  1. Good to see as well as Stagecoach in Plymouth, First are providing Boxing Day services for Cornwall as well.

  2. On a serious note Cornwall have been left to dry.The government is cutting its subsidy for Tfl .It has to be self sufficient.Where is the money for franchises going to come from now.

    1. Scare mongering I'm afraid. As I noted on another thread Cornwall Council has made it clear that, despite having the powers, it is NOT intending to pursue bus franchising in Cornwall. The council's aims are to encourage bus and train use and to better integrate road and rail services. However they wish to achieve this through partnership working, not franchising. Franchising is very much seen as a "last resort" option, but not one they intend to pursue in the immediate future.

    2. There never was any more money for franchises, local authorities have to use existing funds.

  3. The New Stagecoach sw website is now LIVE and seems much better too!

  4. Seasonal Services - It is interesting to note who is providing Boxing day services. It appears that in Southern England most urban high frequency routes will get a special service and a few longer routes - Buses of Somerset is normal Sunday service. New Year's Eve is often Saturday service, but early finish or including night buses? - it varies. New Years day is Sunday or nothing (why?). However Christmas Day services show more of a desire to get the bus to replace the car. First 75 &78 Heathrow - Slough, Metrobus 10 Gatwick - Crawley (these are 24/365), but also Go South Coast M1/M2 extended as Poole - Bournemouth Hospital or Christchurch and Isle of Wight routes 1,3,5,7 & 9. You don't need a car - we do the driving. First Bristol by lowering and restructuring the fares and introducing 24/7 bus routes has seen a big jump in ridership and yes the do need every double decker they can get. Run adequate public transport and people do choose not to own a car, particularly true of single under 30s. My daughter complains when she can't get on the bus because its full - at 03:30! When will Plymouth get a 24/7 service? RPW

  5. So that means Plymouth Citybus/Go ahead are the only large operator in the whole of the SW to still be stuck in the 1970's and providing no services at all for workers etc on Boxing Day then? Poor show. Thank god for Stagecoach and First down this way then.

    1. Citybus still believe in family values. Good for them. Plus I bet First and Stagecoach dont even cover there costs.

    2. It's not about covering costs, its about providing a service for passengers who travel with an operator all year and the operator wants to keep them happy.
Even up here where Nexus wants to take control of services, the two large operators (Go Ahead and Stagecoach) provide extensive commercially operated Boxing Day services.

    3. What about staff they also need a break.Whats the obsession with Boxing day buses .Use taxis

  6. So aren't bus drivers allowed time off with their families over the festive period?? is only 3 days a year where Plymouth doesn't have a bus service, taxis still run on those particular days.

    1. Yes, they are, which is why operators use volunteer drivers.

    2. Christmas Day, I accept no buses.

However Boxing Day and New Year's Day are now major trading days and, apart from people who work in shops, other people want to get around too. Ideally a full Sunday service would be provided on both days, but I think at the very least, a Sunday level of service should be operated between 09.00 and 18.00 - and that applies to all routes of all operators where a Sunday service is provided.

    3. Boxing Day buses are normally operated by volunteer drivers who get enhanced rates - in my experience there are always drivers who want to work to earn extra money (plus a lieu day) or have nothing else to do.
Go North East appear to be operating over 100 buses on Boxing Day.

  7. Interesting thought there, anon 23:15 - bus drivers should have time off with their families, but taxi drivers shouldn't.

  8. Personally I think it is very backward thinking of Citybus to not provide a service on Boxing Day. I somehow seem to get service updates from First operations across south and sw England and every single one is providing some sort of service on Boxing Day, as is every single town/city based Stagecoach operation. I know for a fact that if First were still in Plymouth they had plans to operate services within the city on Boxing Day as well. Even more embarassing for Citybus is that I can not find any other Go Ahead op that is not operating on Boxing Day, so they are well and truly on their own, and we want to know why businesses etc won't come down here, could it be companies operating in the dark ages like this perhaps? More so, it damages the local economy. Think of all the shops etc open on Boxing Day that will be quiet cos people can't get there, as they have no Citybus to get there. If they don;t open next year their employees lose out on valuable extra cash. Not everyone is bothered about Xmas and attitudes like this will cost Plymouth dear, not to mention the fact people who have to work on Boxing Day will lose most of their wages paying for taxis. Well Done Stagecoach and First for understanding your obligations to provide a service.

    1. Xmas is family time for me.Why do people go shopping during holidays.Staff costs are too high during holidayd

      Delete
  9. It's not operating in the dark ages, if people didn't make a fuss of shopping on Boxing Day then the shops wouldn't open and people would be able to spend time with their families like Boxing Day should be spent. Companies like princess yachts shut down for 2 weeks at Christmas, but you don't hear people moaning because they have to wait an extra 2 weeks for their boat. It is 3 days over a 365 day year.

    1. Thank you at least someone sensible its all me me these days .Years ago you hardly saw anyone shopping on Boxing day but these days everyone is out come New Year shops are packed with returns.

  10. Princess Yachts is not a service industry: Plymouth Citybus is. As previously stated here. staffing on boxing day would be by volunteers. We could all come up with something we do not like about our job. If a business providing a service on a bank holiday to customers who want it is such a concern, then don't work for a service industry.
