Fares up

On the 29th November 2015 you will see a change to some of the tickets we offer and our ticket prices.

With regret from this date most adult tickets will see a price increase. Adult singles tickets will generally see an increase of 10p or 15p, with adult return tickets increasing by 20p or 30p. The adult zone 1 & 2 Dayrider will see an increase of 20p, whilst adult weekly tickets will be increased by £1.

Tavistock and Rame tickets will be withdrawn and will now be incorporated into zone 3 across all sales channels, meaning a clear zone structure.

We are pleased to announce keeping in line with our plans to make children's bus travel affordable, we will not be increasing any child fares; this follows on from out reduction of many child prices last year. All zone 4 tickets will also remain unchanged.

We will still be giving a 15% discount against adult fare to those in full time education, training and apprentices.

A downloadable price guides will be available on plymouthbus.co.uk showing all new season ticket prices. A printed price guide will be available from our Travel Centre from 20th November 2015.

We have done our very best to absorb the increases in costs we have experiences by delaying and limiting price increases. Our last general adult fare increases took place in March 2014 for day tickets and September 2014 for season tickets.

Since 2014 many of our fares have either reduced or stayed the same. We apologise that this fare review is necessary.

  1. Completely disgraceful, only doing it to line the pockets of the FATCATS, if it was still owned by the council we'd have fares that were half these current prices

  2. Fair play I guess. It would be nice to see an improvement in services to go with the price increase. Lets hope that happens in January.

  3. On what basis of fact does Anon 05:43 base that statement? If it is true, somewhere like Swindon with a council owned company and a major group operating should prove the case. Having just looked at a journey between the centre of Swindon and West Swindon Centre, and guess what - the council owned company has a higher fare!

  4. I am so glad I have been a First/Stagecoach customer for years now. My fares have not gone up since 2012, in fact I pay less now than I did 10 years ago..lovely.

    2. hear hear graham. if first devon and cornwall had invested in their fleet and didnt charge stupid fares they would still be here now. so citybus have put fares up. they have invested 10 million in new vehicles in 2 years, with another 20 due either side of xmas, to see off the london deckers. no doubt in the future there will be more new vehicles in the pipeline to oust the older darts. 1 bus costs at least 110,000 pounds a year to run, which covers fuel, drivers wages, insurance, etc. citybus have over 190 buses. you do the maths. citybus is the preferred event transport provider, does lots of stuff with the community. wot did first ever do!
you can't tell me that scsw won't put fares up at some point.
the fact is citybus invests in its staff, the fleet and the city. this doesn't happen for free.

    3. First knew exactly what they were doing. Lower fares got more people on their services and damaged citybus profit margins before First pulled out when they were ready and had sale agreed with SC. I suspect SC will eventually put fares up but not from £40 per month to £61 and I believe any large increase will come with enhanced network coverage in the city!

  5. Well of course here comes the PCB bashing. Only to be expected on here now, which is a sad reflection of the times. New buses last year, new buses this year another 20 new buses due around Xmas I believe. How does Anon of 05:43 think these will get paid for? I expect even as a self insurer PCB's claims will have rocketed thanks to the "No win no fee" ambulance chasers. I guess the staff will be looking for a pay rise next year. There have been no price increases since 2014 according to the article. Not many companies will be able to say that.
No increase for child fares or students, that's got to be a positive. I don't want to see PCB go the way of FDC, I'm happy to pay a little extra for my dayrider to be able to use these newer more comfortable buses. You certainly can't knock the investment by PCB. If they can only work with the City Council to manage the never ending roadworks which will improve reliability all round that would be great.

    1. Am I the only one who thinks the 'first increase since 2014' is not exactly much to boast about? It is only 2015 now? I notice as well in the download the monthly tickets have gone up by some 4%. This was not even mentioned on the website. Cunning.

  6. Good to see some pro Citybus/Go Ahead comments on this site. As already said they have invested more than any other company in bus travel in the city. I hope we can take the Stagecoach manager at his word aswell. Before their Plymouth operation commenced he commented in the press that SC would be looking to increase bus usage in the city by attracting new customers from the ranks of people who currently do not use the bus. In the recent past so much energy has been wasted on inter company rivalry rather than concentrating on encouraging the motorist to consider bus travel as an option.

    1. With any news on a fare increase there is bound to be negative comments. In fact with this story it seems to be pretty fairly balanced with a few positive comments as well. There have been a few comments which have not got through to the site as they were just ranting, but most have been published where they make sense. I dont think any of the comments left above could be classed as slander in any way

    2. Graham, I hope ridiculous and hurtful comments such as the above don't deter you from continuing your excellent blog. As an industry insider, far away from the SW, I hasten to add, I see no sense of anything remotely biased in your reporting. It is they who accuse you who are themselves biased.

    1. So I make that 220 devide by 3 days Then devide by 6 hours per day gives you a total of 12 passengers per hour. Lets say half are concession pass holders that leaves you with 6 paying customers an hour. That will need to improve by quite a bit to justify purchasing 54 and 55 plate buses. Dont want to see a family business go under but that would be suicide.

    2. The quote from the owner in the Cornish Times was much less than that number using the service on the first two days. Day three must have been good!
