Plymouth Citybus New Times

Service updates from Plymouth Citybus:

Commencing from 5th October 2013

Service 12 New Service operating between Tavistock and Plymouth up to every 30 minutes for most of the day Monday to Saturday along with a Sunday Service

This is of course the new Blue Flash service to compete with First Devon & Cornwall Tavistock services

Commencing from 6th October 2013

Service 33/A These services are being replaced with two separate services:
Service 32 will operate up to every 15 minutes from the City Centre to Millbridge, Stoke and the Torpoint Ferry Terminal and up to every 30 minutes to Torpoint Monday to Saturday
Service 33 is to operate from the City Centre to Milehouse then St Levan Road, Ford, Admiralty Street, then St Levan Road back to Milehouse and the City Centre up to every 30 minutes for most of the day.

The 32 is to compete with First’s 81 and the 33 is up against First service 4

Service 29, Inbound Services have a minor re-time of route to improve the overall pacing of the Service.
Service 30 will no longer serve Transit Way and will instead serve Crownhill Village. (This will restore the link with West Park and Crownhill)
Service 40, 41 slight change of route in that from North Hill to the City Centre the Service is to operate via Drake Circus and Exeter Street as opposed to Mayflower Street and Western Approach. Service 40 will focus on Southway Drive, with Service 41 focusing on Dunnet Road.

Service 42/A Minor time this service will start earlier Sundays and Bank Holidays.
Service 43, Minor timing changes between West Park and St Budeaux Square.
Services 43, 40 and 41 will work together to enable passengers the ability to travel between St Budeaux Milehouse - City Centre – University - Mutley Plain - Crownhill and Southway without changing buses

Service 43B minor changes to times
Service 44/A. Change of route, frequency and presentation.
The change of route is that all services to operate a route of City Centre to Crownhill then Taunton Avenue, Whitliegh Green. Returning buses will leave Whitleigh Green then Taunton Avenue, Crownhill to the City Centre. The frequency change is that the new service will operate at up to every 15 minutes between the City Centre and Whitleigh Monday to Saturday no changes to Sundays or evening services. Service 44 has been timed to enable improved connections with the Service 42 at Crownhill for those wishing to travel to and from Derriford Hospital.
Service 61/A. Service Monday to Friday adjusted to match the Saturday frequency of up to every 15 minutes with Service 61 operating to Transit Way via Honicknowle and West Park with Service 62 operating via Brake Farm.

Commencing from 27th October 2013

Service 27 Subject to Traffic Commissioner Approval, changes to the Service 27 will commence from this date.
Service 27 is to be split into two separate services 27/A, with Service 27 operating hourly as per the current route with the Service 27A operating the current route between the City Centre and Eggbuckland but instead of operating to Crownhill to Derriford on an hourly basis the Service is to operate via Asda in Estover and Mainstone. Evening and Sunday services would be unchanged.

This is a surprise which I am sure will be welcomed by Mainstone residents for at least giving them a bus service again. It pretty much restores the old 46/47 between Derriford and the City Centre which was the route which First pushed out of Mainstone when they set up their 15 service. An hourly service is less than what they get now but its a lot better than nothing!

Commencing from the 3rd November 2013.

Service 13, This service is being operated by Jackets Coaches of Callington. We believe the timetable will be unchanged with Plymouth Citybus season tickets day and return tickets valid on this service.
Actually the times are slightly different as the service seems to be running 7 minutes later throughout the day.

Service 14 which is to operate hourly Monday to Saturday between Plympton, Plymstock, City Centre, Devonport, Ham, Derriford Hospital and Tamar Science Park. This new service is brought to you thanks to funding from Plymouth City Council.

Wow! Thats just about a full return of the original 10/11 service run by Plympton Coachlines years ago when it was run by nice big Leyland Atlanteans. I am guessing we will get Dennis Darts this time round. Look forward to doing the full run on that one.

Service 27 Evening Services withdrawn Sunday to Saturday. These services are in the main replaced by new evening Service 28B Sunday to Saturday

Service 28/B Evening Services 28 replaced in the main with a new service 28B operating Sunday to Saturday. Evening Sunday services are brought to you thanks to funding from Plymouth City Council.

Service 29, Additional services in the evenings Monday to Saturday between Transit Way and the City Centre to replace in part the withdrawn evening Services on the Service 43B Sunday to

Service 31, This service is being operated by Target Travel of Plymouth. We believe the timetable will be unchanged with Plymouth Citybus season tickets day and return tickets valid on this service. Saturday.

Nothing up yet on Target Travel web site. No surprise there.

Service 34, School Holiday short workings between Royal Parade and the Royal William Yard to be withdrawn. We aim to be back next summer with enhanced Services but will try something a little different. Additional changes to some morning journeys.

Service 42, Withdrawal of two journeys Monday to Friday these being the 08:20 Derriford to City Centre and the 15:55 Tamerton Foliot to City Centre

The Day Rider fare on the full Tavistock service now being cheaper than the day return!

Of course these fares are prompted by First offering some good deals of their own so Citybus had to react. The advantage Citybus have is the greater coverage of the Plymouth area which might make their day tickets more attractive to some passengers.

I still aim to start looking at all services route by route over the coming weeks as there is a lot to take in!

As always comments / views / predictions always welcome!

  1. I'm guessing PCB's new day-rider fare will mean that they now have the edge on the new Tavy service & will push First out.

    1. Really? I wouldn't count the Citybus chickens before they've hatched!!! You never know what else First may have planned.

  2. Citybus advert in the Tavistock Times Gazette today for a 7 day ticket for £15 - valid in service 12 only until the end of November. First advertising new day return, weekly and monthly ticket on (the few) bus shelters in Tavistock. Over the top and into battle chaps!

Like Graham, I look forward to riding the old 10/11 Plympton Coachlines route, if you ever need to sleep, ride the route in your mind on an Atlantean and you'll soon drift off!!

  3. Citybus advert in the Tavistock Times Gazette today: £15 for a 7 day ticket valid on service 12 only, offer until the end of November. First have adverts on the few bus shelters in the town for their cheaper return fares, weekly and monthly tickets. Looking forward to riding the 14, I remember taking the 10/11 from Torpoint Ferry to Higher Compton (where my Grandparents used to live), always use that route if I can't sleep, never manage to get from end to end without drifting off!

  4. Wow, some huge changes. Looks like we really do have a bus war. Going to be a confusing time for the passengers!
    Good news for mainstone.

  5. I wish Plymouth Citybus would not cut services in certain places to introduce competing services elsewhere (in some cases the same to First), particularly in places that previously had a 10 minute service. If the company want to grow the service it is going to make it much harder promoting a 15 minute service over a 10 minute one. If First were to pull out and Citybus take over, I'm wondering whether the service levels will be kept to the levels that First had before Citybus started operating (i.e. every 10 minutes to Saltash, every 15 minutes to Ford etc).

    1. I see where you are coming from - but First are doing exactly the same, and have done on many occasions in the past. Also I think a 10 min to 15 min change isn't too bad, many area have much less than this anyway!
