In the battle for Tavistock passengers it will help that Citybus’ Blue Flash certainly stand out.

It is absolutely unbelievable that supposedly professional and responsible companies should allow this garbage to be provided for their paying customers. Public Transport Experience

The new website claims, "In less than 90 minutes you can boldly go where no bus has gone before", sadly this isn't quite true, but excusing that, they do have a slightly new concept over the previous service operated by Stagecoach North West. North West Bus Blog

But the question still remains. Is there a viable business along the University Road for two major operators? Certainly not, as observed by fbb, during Uni vacations. Public Transport Experience

Plymouth Citybus New Times

Service updates from Plymouth Citybus:

Commencing from 5th October 2013

Service 12 New Service operating between Tavistock and Plymouth up to every 30 minutes for most of the day Monday to Saturday along with a Sunday Service

This is of course the new Blue Flash service to compete with First Devon & Cornwall Tavistock services

Commencing from 6th October 2013

Service 33/A These services are being replaced with two separate services:
Service 32 will operate up to every 15 minutes from the City Centre to Millbridge, Stoke and the Torpoint Ferry Terminal and up to every 30 minutes to Torpoint Monday to Saturday
Service 33 is to operate from the City Centre to Milehouse then St Levan Road, Ford, Admiralty Street, then St Levan Road back to Milehouse and the City Centre up to every 30 minutes for most of the day.

The 32 is to compete with First’s 81 and the 33 is up against First service 4

Service 29, Inbound Services have a minor re-time of route to improve the overall pacing of the Service.
Service 30 will no longer serve Transit Way and will instead serve Crownhill Village. (This will restore the link with West Park and Crownhill)
Service 40, 41 slight change of route in that from North Hill to the City Centre the Service is to operate via Drake Circus and Exeter Street as opposed to Mayflower Street and Western Approach. Service 40 will focus on Southway Drive, with Service 41 focusing on Dunnet Road.

Service 42/A Minor time this service will start earlier Sundays and Bank Holidays.
Service 43, Minor timing changes between West Park and St Budeaux Square.
Services 43, 40 and 41 will work together to enable passengers the ability to travel between St Budeaux Milehouse - City Centre – University - Mutley Plain - Crownhill and Southway without changing buses

Service 43B minor changes to times
Service 44/A. Change of route, frequency and presentation.
The change of route is that all services to operate a route of City Centre to Crownhill then Taunton Avenue, Whitliegh Green. Returning buses will leave Whitleigh Green then Taunton Avenue, Crownhill to the City Centre. The frequency change is that the new service will operate at up to every 15 minutes between the City Centre and Whitleigh Monday to Saturday no changes to Sundays or evening services. Service 44 has been timed to enable improved connections with the Service 42 at Crownhill for those wishing to travel to and from Derriford Hospital.
Service 61/A. Service Monday to Friday adjusted to match the Saturday frequency of up to every 15 minutes with Service 61 operating to Transit Way via Honicknowle and West Park with Service 62 operating via Brake Farm.

Commencing from 27th October 2013

Service 27 Subject to Traffic Commissioner Approval, changes to the Service 27 will commence from this date.
Service 27 is to be split into two separate services 27/A, with Service 27 operating hourly as per the current route with the Service 27A operating the current route between the City Centre and Eggbuckland but instead of operating to Crownhill to Derriford on an hourly basis the Service is to operate via Asda in Estover and Mainstone. Evening and Sunday services would be unchanged.

This is a surprise which I am sure will be welcomed by Mainstone residents for at least giving them a bus service again. It pretty much restores the old 46/47 between Derriford and the City Centre which was the route which First pushed out of Mainstone when they set up their 15 service. An hourly service is less than what they get now but its a lot better than nothing!

Commencing from the 3rd November 2013.

Service 13, This service is being operated by Jackets Coaches of Callington. We believe the timetable will be unchanged with Plymouth Citybus season tickets day and return tickets valid on this service.
Actually the times are slightly different as the service seems to be running 7 minutes later throughout the day.

Service 14 which is to operate hourly Monday to Saturday between Plympton, Plymstock, City Centre, Devonport, Ham, Derriford Hospital and Tamar Science Park. This new service is brought to you thanks to funding from Plymouth City Council.

Wow! Thats just about a full return of the original 10/11 service run by Plympton Coachlines years ago when it was run by nice big Leyland Atlanteans. I am guessing we will get Dennis Darts this time round. Look forward to doing the full run on that one.

Service 27 Evening Services withdrawn Sunday to Saturday. These services are in the main replaced by new evening Service 28B Sunday to Saturday

Service 28/B Evening Services 28 replaced in the main with a new service 28B operating Sunday to Saturday. Evening Sunday services are brought to you thanks to funding from Plymouth City Council.

Service 29, Additional services in the evenings Monday to Saturday between Transit Way and the City Centre to replace in part the withdrawn evening Services on the Service 43B Sunday to

Service 31, This service is being operated by Target Travel of Plymouth. We believe the timetable will be unchanged with Plymouth Citybus season tickets day and return tickets valid on this service. Saturday.

Nothing up yet on Target Travel web site. No surprise there.

Service 34, School Holiday short workings between Royal Parade and the Royal William Yard to be withdrawn. We aim to be back next summer with enhanced Services but will try something a little different. Additional changes to some morning journeys.

Service 42, Withdrawal of two journeys Monday to Friday these being the 08:20 Derriford to City Centre and the 15:55 Tamerton Foliot to City Centre

Service 43B Evening Services withdrawn Sunday to Saturday. These services between Transit Way have in the main being replaced by additional Service 29 operating Monday to Saturday.

Schools Services

Service 103 is a new Plymouth School day service which in part replaces the to be withdrawn Service 115 and 109. Service 103 is to operate from Plympton to Notre Dame School.
Service 104, Service to be withdrawn. See Service 29 and 61 for alternative journeys
Service 109. Service to be withdrawn See New Service 103 and the Service 21/A for alternative journeys

I still aim to start looking at all services route by route over the coming weeks as there is a lot to take in!

As always comments / views / predictions always welcome!

2500 and counting

I have been thinking long and hard as to what to put in my 2500th post on Plymothian Transit. The original plan was an announcement of a side project of mine which I have been working on for some time but its still a fair way off before I think I can push that out properly. (Some of you may already have found it by now anyway…)

Instead I shall be entirely selfish and have a posting based purely on my own opinion on what is happening in and around Plymouth over the coming months. It seems we are in a state of war. First verses the rest of the world, but in particular Plymouth Citybus, aka Go Ahead.

Of course it should also be pointed out that its not really a proper war with proper hand to hand combat. This war is much more like a game of chess. Each side taking turns to play then sitting back and waiting to see what the other side does next. We have seen some strong moves by Plymouth Citybus and then some moves by First which at this stage seem interesting rather than strong. However it does seem that First is about to play the fares game in a big way as indicated by a recent comment here on PT:

New lower fares announced by First start 22nd September.. First Day £3. First Week (PLYMOUTH) £11 First Month PLYMOUTH reduced from £60 to £40. First Day PLUS includes Tavistock £4.50 First Week PLUS £20 and First Month PLUS £60. Represents some pretty big savings here

I should point out that there is nothing on line about these fares yet but I have heard this from several sources so the cuts are clearly happening. As another recent comment puts it

PCBs Tavistock fares were announced as £4.50 SINGLE and £6.10 return (First have been £6.20 return). So First are going to be every 20 mins and £4.50 return - PCB are going to be every 30 mins and £6.10 return. Both using leather seated E400s? That could be interesting!!!

Once all the new timetables are published, which wont be long now, we will have a good look at these Tavistock services but its clear that First are fighting back hard on their core route. Will we see Citybus match the fares, or at least get a lot closer? I have heard many suggestions that the new First fares are “suicidal” but I guess that depends on how long the low fares last and how many passengers they retain from Citybus. Whatever the case it will indeed be very interesting.

It does seem that First have covered Citybus having brand new luxury DDs by utilising the 12 Reg Park & Ride fleet (very strong rumours from several sources suggest this is the case). This in turn might annoy passengers on the Park & Ride services and maybe even the City Council but as a commercial service First are free to use whatever buses they like. You can see why it makes sense for First to use them on Tavistock duties but it does raise lots of questions. Why have First left this service unloved for so long? Even when they took the opportunity to invest a few years back they choose to stick leather seats in a few buses and paint them purple. Sadly for everyone they chose the awful Volvo B6BLEs with the most uncomfortable hard seats for which the leather does nothing at all. They do look really smart though from the outside! You just know that if the Plymouth – Tavistock services were run by Stagecoach it would be very different indeed! They have a strong record of investment in buses, something which First as a national group have failed in big time. They are trying hard to catch up now in some areas but Plymouth is not alone in having an aging fleet.

The mention of Stagecoach brings me to another question that I am struggling to answer.

One thing I am proud of with Plymothian Transit is that it has become a forum where transport issues can be discussed freely and there have been some very strong views expressed on both sides of the Citybus v First debate. Unlike the comments on The Herald web site which often turn abusive the comments left here have generally steered clear of abuse (just!) for the sake of it. It is clear that many people on either side are very passionate in their arguments. I am sure in many cases because their jobs may be on the line if either side fails.

I was going to illustrate my point with a few of the comments left but I don't want to make it look like I am picking on anyone for their opinions. Just have a look back through the comments on the last few weeks worth of posts. It does seem that many of these comments are pro-First and anti Citybus at the moment. Its not a big imbalance as their are plenty for Citybus too but it seems that many of you are hoping for a robust fight back by First and expecting Citybus to get a bloody nose!

What I don't understand is how Stagecoach are getting away with it?

Within a few days back in July we had a big announcement that Stagecoach were launching a massive fight against First on the Plymouth – Torbay corridor with brand new double decker buses. Just two days later we get Plymouth Citybus doing the same but on a lot less ambitious scale against First on their Tavistock corridor followed by a much smaller battle on the Torpoint services. The response by First to these two sides of attack could not have been more different! Immediate surrender to Stagecoach while taking the fight to Citybus. It is clear that quite a few drivers jobs will go as result of giving up on the X80/81 yet there has been a complete lack of hostility against Stagecoach with all the anger directed at Citybus / Go Ahead! Why?

One other thing which is noticeable at the moment is the anger against First cutting back some of their Plymouth services in order to concentrate the fight against Citybus. In particular the withdrawal from Mainstone on the 15 which leaves a large estate with no service at all with no hope of Citybus directing any buses that way either. I do feel sorry for First here as its clearly not an area which is going to make any bus company any money. When First introduced new Ugobus service 15 it surprised a lot of people (including Citybus) as it was the only route which offered anything different to what Citybus were already running. It also gave Citybus the excuse for pulling out of Mainstone, which was pretty inevitable at the time but saved a lot of grief for Citybus. It still amazes me that the 15 has lasted this long into Mainstone even if it was cut back over the last few years.

The only part of the 15 that seems to carry any passengers is Marjon / Derriford to City Centre. The days when First had the direct service to City Centre to itself have long gone. I have a bus pass I can use on either bus company. My journey of choice to town from Derriford is the 15. In fact I often choose to catch the 15 to town from Asda even though the 50 will get me there a lot quicker. The main reason for this being that the 15 is a lot quieter – I can get a seat I want – the 50 is often full up, the 15 is rarely busy. If you catch a 15 to town from Derriford you will often see people at the bus stops let the bus go by and wait for a Citybus over the same route. I dont know why as I keep getting told that First fares are cheaper than Citybus? (I have no idea if this is true or not as I have had my bus for over ten years now!)

A lot of attention is being placed on Go Ahead being the aggressor here against poor old First bus. How dare Go Ahead pick on First and try to get their routes. GA are portrayed as bullies only interested in profits. (As if First Group are not?). Well, GA ARE the aggressors this time. It was not that long ago that the boot was on the other foot. First introduced services against Citybus when the council had put them up for sale.

Bus Wars Detail

In both cases the main motivation seems to be to protect what is theirs against some new competitor coming in and taking over. When Citybus was up for sale the last thing First needed was someone like Stagecoach coming in and wanting a fight so the tactic was to destabilise  the company to put prospective buyers off. When this failed we soon saw the first routes being cut back and all the nice new buses being sent away.

This time we saw First Group clearly in difficulty and wanting to sell off whole areas of operation quickly. We even saw Tim O’Toole describe South Devon and Northampton as being “Almost in close down”. (Northampton has since closed.) The last thing GA want is someone like Stagecoach to come in and start wanting to fight…

So what will happen next. Who will win? I really dont know. The battle for Tavistock will be very hard and Citybus wont find it easy at all. The new Plymouth routes by First really wont affect Citybus that much though. I dont understand the logic behind the new 6 at all. Hopefully First know something I don't! The new man at First Devon Alex Carter has a good reputation and seems to know what he is doing. Can he really turn the company around? I get the feeling that he could, if, and its a very big if, First Group give him the cards to play with.

For the record I do hope that First can turn things around. I do  like what Go Ahead are doing at Citybus and more than welcome the extra investment they are putting into Citybus – its is long overdue. Many commenters on this blog have expressed the view that we need both companies to survive to keep each other on their toes. If First cant do that then the sooner they sell up to someone who can the better for all of us.

Of course we have been here before...

Western Greyhound are bearing the brunt of their cutbacks (or rather their passengers are):

First Changes explained. First response by Passengers

First have now released the news that things are changing

A number of changes are being made to the bus network in Plymouth as First seeks to strengthen its local business.

The changes - which see the creation of two new routes and some frequency improvements as well as some route adjustments and withdrawals - take effect on 27 October and affect the following services: 2, 3, 3A, 4, 5, 6, 7, 15, 83, 84, 86, 93, PR1, X80, X81. In addition Services 48 and 81/81A are being altered slightly from 2 November.

Talking about what is happening, Alex Carter, Director for First South West, says: "Over the past few months we have looked at our network in and around Plymouth assessing its performance and its overall competitive edge. The review has shown that some changes are needed to strengthen the business and so we are taking steps to implement these alterations from the end of October.

"We will be changing some existing routes and setting up some entirely new ones. Similarly well be looking at various things we can do to make using the bus easier, while also increasing the value for money for our customers get when using our services. This will include fare initiatives to support the changes being made, the detail of which we'll make public in the coming days and weeks.

"We understand that changes like these can be unsettling and that alterations to routes can have a real impact on our customers lives, affecting their own routines and schedules. Clearly some local people will need to look again at the local bus network, understanding how these alterations impact their ability to get to important destinations. In most cases though, people will find that alternatives do exist for them, and where we can assist our teams will help people find them.

"Over the next few weeks well be doing what we can to ensure that these changes are communicated as widely and effectively as possible. We will be using a variety of tools to do this including putting information on buses and on some billboards, door-dropping timetables to homes in parts of the city and hosting customer road show events."

New timetable information and an updated network map will be available online and in the travel shops very soon.

Specific changes, effective as of 27 October 2013

Service 2 (City Centre - Mount Batten):

The frequency of buses on this route is being improved from the end of October. From this date buses will run every 10 minutes Monday - Saturday (compared to every 12 minutes at present) meaning customers will have more opportunities to travel. In addition to this the route that Service 2 buses take is being amended slightly. From the end of October buses between Plymstock Broadway and Pomphlett Roundabout will follow alternate routes every other journey, with one travelling via Pomphlett Gardens and the next travelling via Oreston. These changes mean that despite the loss of the old Service 6 (see details below), people travelling to and from Oreston will still have access to a bus every 20 minutes during the day Monday - Saturday. Similarly they will also regain an evening service from the end of October. Additionally, most journeys on Service 2 will continue from Royal Parade as Service 3, thus providing links from Plymstock to Devonport and St Budeaux

Service 3 (City Centre - St Budeaux):

The frequency of buses on this route is being reduced slightly. From the end of October buses will run every 10 minutes Monday - Saturday. In addition to this the route is being adjusted with all Service 3 buses set to terminate at St Budeaux from this date. Every other Service 3 bus will, however, continue on from St Budeaux as a Service 3A bus - providing links to West Park, Honicknowle, Peverell and the City Centre (see details below). The changes to Service 3 mean that people wishing to travel to and from Barne Barton by bus will need to make alternative arrangements.

Service 3A (City Centre - St Budeaux):

This new service will provide links between the city centre, Peverell, Honicknowle, West Park and St Budeaux while also giving people the opportunity to connect with Service 3 for onward journeys to Devonport and the City Centre. Buses will operate every 20 minutes during the daytime (Monday - Saturday).

Service 4 (City Centre - Keyham):

The frequency of buses on this route is being reduced slightly. From the end of October buses will run every 20 minutes Monday - Saturday (compared to every 15 minutes at present). In addition the timetable on Sundays is being altered slightly. Customers are advised to check the new timetables carefully to ensure they understand what is happening.

Service 5 (City Centre - Mount Gould):

We regret this route is being withdrawn from the end of October. People wishing to travel to and from Mount Gould will however find that alternative services do exist.

OLD Service 6 (City Centre - Staddiscombe):

The existing Service 6 bus route is being withdrawn but a new Service 6 is being created at the same time (see details below). People who used the old service 6 will find that part of the previous route - that which runs between the city centre and Plymstock Broadway - will be covered by the revised Service 2 (see details above). People wishing to travel further into Staddiscombe will find that alternative services do exist.

NEW Service 6 (City Centre - Efford):

A brand new Service 6 route is being created which will provide journeys between the City Centre, Lipson Vale and Efford. Running every 15 minutes during the day (Monday - Saturday) buses will follow the same route in and out of the city, travelling via North Hill, Lipson Vale, Torridge Way and Pike Road in both directions.

Service 7 (City Centre - Elburton):

We regret that this route - which has under performed for a number of years - is being withdrawn from the end of October. People wishing to travel to and from Elburton, Plymstock and the City Centre will however still be able to use our improved Service 93 (Plymouth - Dartmouth) to make local journeys.

Service 15 (City Centre - Derriford - Rodborough / Woolwell):

The route of this service is changing from the end of October to provide additional connections with Tavistock services travelling via Roborough and Woolwell. As a result of this change though Service 15 buses will no longer call at Estover or Mainstone from the 27 October.
The frequency of buses is also changing: from the end of October they'll run every 20 minutes Monday - Friday and every 30 minutes on Saturdays.
Additionally, on arrival in the City centre, most Monday to Friday journeys will continue as a Service 4. This means that customers wishing to travel from Roborough / Woolwell towards Keyham can do so relatively easily at these times - they simply board in Roborough / Woolwell, staying on the same vehicle in the City Centre, before being taken to Keyham on a Service 4 journey.

Service 83 (Plymouth - Yelverton -Tavistock):

The timetable of this service is changing in October. Specifically the frequency of buses is being increased so that there is one bus every 20 minutes during the peak period (compared to every 30 minutes at present) In addition to this, journeys to and from Tavistock are being scheduled to connect with Service 15 arrivals and departures in Roborough. This will enable those people wishing to travel to or from Derriford and Mutley Plain to do so.
In addition to this some Service 83 journeys in the morning and evening will be extended to start and finish at Whitchurch - this change compensates for the loss of Service 84 (see details below) and means that commuters in this area will still be able to travel.

Service 84 (Plymouth - Derriford - Tavistock):

In order to better match resources against the level of demand for services, this route is being withdrawn from 27 October. In its place changes are being made to Service 83 to add in extended journeys to and from Whitchurch in the morning, while connections between Service 83 and Service 15 are also being put in place.

Service 86 (Plymouth - Derriford - Tavistock):

The route that Service 86 buses take around Derriford is changing. From the end of October buses will travel via Derriford Roundabout, Derriford Hospital, Plymbridge Road, Marjon's, Runway Road and the A386. In addition to this the timetable is being tweaked slightly: buses will continue to only operate during the Monday - Friday peak period.

Service 93 (Plymouth - Kingsbridge - Dartmouth):

The timetable of this service is being amended to provide some additional short journeys running between Elburton (Elburton School) and the City Centre, to provide a bus every half hour This change is being made to compensate for the loss of Service 7 journeys. The longer journeys between Plymouth and Dartmouth are unaffected and remain as they are. From the end of October Service 93 buses will depart from Royal Parade (Stop A8), sharing the stop with Service 2 - which means that buses travelling the same direction will leave from the same place.

Service PR1 (George Park and Ride):

The timetable of the PR1 Park and Ride Service is being altered. From 27 October buses will run every 12 minutes during the daytime (compared to 10 minutes at present).

Service X80 (Plymouth - Ivybridge - Totnes - Paignton - Torquay) and Service X81 Dartmouth - Totnes - Paignton Torquay):

These two services are being withdrawn from 27 October. People who use the route should not be concerned though as another " almost identical - service has been registered by Stagecoach. This means that people should still able to get from A to B easily. To ease the transition from one operator to the other, First has also made arrangements for season tickets, and particularly scholar passes, to be honoured by the new operator for a set period of time.

Specific changes affecting services in Plymouth, from 2 November

Service 48 (Wembury - City Centre - Burrator):

The timetable of this service is being changed slightly. Specifically the winter timetable - applicable until Easter 2014 - will take effect from 2 November, meaning that the timetable for journeys on Sundays will change. Specifically the last bus from Burrator, terminating in Plymouth City Centre, will be at 1605 hours, while the last bus to Wembury from Royal Parade will depart at 1519 hours. The last bus from Wembury to the City Centre will depart at 1555 hours. These changes are being made at the request of Plymouth City Council who fund the service. Customers should note the changes only affect the Sunday timetable. Journeys running Monday - Saturday remain as they are.
Service 81/81A (Plymouth - Torpoint - Insworke): To coincide with changes being made elsewhere in Cornwall at the same time, Service

81/81A is being altered from 2 November.

Specifically the timetable is being simplified. In addition the route is being altered so that all buses follow a standard route within Plymouth. From 2 November they will travel via Devonport and Union Street and will not call at Stoke or Milehouse. Customers are advised to check the new timetable carefully before travelling to ensure they know what is happening.

For more information about all the changes being made, to view new and existing timetables or to find out more about First, log onto www.firstgroup.com/devon. New timetables will be made available online and in hard copy format - available from Travel Shops very soon.
First is on Twitter and Facebook, at www.twitter.com/FirstBus_Devon and www.facebook.com/FirstDevonandCornwall. First also has a smartphone app (for apple and android) phones, which can offer people access to timetable and route information while they are on the move. The app, which is free to download, can be found online by searching for 'First Bus App'.

VOSA Greyhound and Target

Its not just Plymouth Citybus and First Devon & Cornwall that are making changes to their services. Western Greyhound have registered a lot of changes recently too. Most of them don't really fit within the geographical remit of this blog but I do keep a log of all Devon & Cornwall registrations HERE on Google Docs.

The 14 is being replaced by a new 14 operated by Plymouth Citybus whilst the 52 is going to Jacketts Coaches.

As previously mentioned I will be looking at all of these route changes in a lot more detail later on once all the information is in! As for First, the most recent comment from them in a question about the 5 coming off suggests things are still under review…

Trathens

While we are in a lull waiting for more detail on the forthcoming timetable changes I can post a few historical photos of interest that have been shared recently by Michael Wadman who very kindly allows me to use them on the blog.

First Repaints

With the long run of repaints into the new swoop livery by Plymouth Citybus its easy to forget that First Devon & Cornwall have a new livery as well. Repaints here have been much slower though. The latest to hit the road is Dennis Trident 33173 which carries the new scheme really well.

Winter timetable but may also help fill in gaps left by the other planned changes in Plymstock?

I notice that the message on their web site now reads

We are currently compiling information on these changes and it will be published on our website, Facebook and Twitter pages very shortly

There are more notices on VOSA for Plymouth Citybus and Western Greyhound which will be given in the next post later on Friday. I will be going back and looking at all of these planned changes in more detail on a route by route basis over the coming weeks once the dust has settled and all the information is in from the companies themselves.

Handy for a couple of months

derrifordFirst Devon & Cornwall produced this handy little guide just a few weeks ago which gives full details of their Derriford Hospital services. Another area which sees stiff competition from Plymouth Citybus
We've created a great new guide to bus routes serving Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. Between them services 15, 84 and 86 provide up to 5 buses an hour between Plymouth City Centre, Mutley Plain, Crownhill and Derriford Hospital.
Included in the guide are timetables for all these services shown as one timetable: this means passengers don't need to look through separate timetables for each of the services to see what time bus you need to catch.
For ease of use timetables for journeys between Plymouth City Centre, Mutley Plain, Crownhill and Derriford Hospital are shown with the pink background. Journeys on services past Derriford Hospital are shown in yellow - we've included the main points on these routes for our passengers convenience in case they need to travel further after their time at the Hospital.
As a reminder these services run to:

  • Service 15: Mainstone - Asda - Estover - Thornbury - University College Marjon - Derriford Hospital - Crownhill - Mutley Plain - North Road East* (for Plymouth train station) - City Centre.
  • Service 84: Tavistock - Whitchurch - Yelverton - Woolwell (for Tesco) - University College Marjon - Derriford Hospital - Crownhill - Mutley Plain - City Centre.
  • Service 86: Tavistock - Bishopsmead - Yelverton - Woolwell (for Tesco) - University College Marjon - Derriford Hospital - Crownhill - Mutley Plain - City Centre.
*Serves North Road East on in bound journeys only. Outbound serves North Hill for University of Plymouth.
The guide also includes a pull out map of the routes and details of where to catch the bus within the Hospital grounds.
Please click here to view/download the new guide as a pdf. Copies are also available from the Derriford Hospital main entrance on level 6.
Derriford hospital bus service guide (PDF - 1.47 MB)
It will only be useful for a very short while though as its all change with Derriford services soon as we expect to see the 15 serve Roborough instead of Mainstone and see a reduction in direct buses to Tavistock,
(Still waiting for full details of these changes!)
Meanwhile Plymouth City Council have been switching bus lane enforecment cameras around…
Camera enforcement will also be introduced at two new locations on Sunday 1 September – the short two-way bus lane joining Leypark Drive and Leypark Walk in Estover and the inbound bus lane running from Western Approach into Union Street (near Reflex).
Plymouth City Council
This first camera is on the small bus only road tucked up behind Asda. Its a very handy shortcut for motorists which is why the council were requested to start enforcing the bus only restriction. There is currently only one bus that serves that road - The 15. Yep – you are one step ahead of me. I do hope that the bus lane camera is turned off when the 15 stops serving Asda/ Mainstone. It will only make people angry!

[This post was scheduled to run at 4am this morning - but it didnt work!]

Cornish Confidence.

The much promised announcement from First Devon & Cornwall has yet to materialise but an interesting new service in Cornwall does make their news pages:

Students at Falmouth University will have a dedicated bus service between Penryn Campus and Falmouth from 29 September.
The new U1 from First runs every 15 minutes between the Penryn and Falmouth campuses, via Penryn and Falmouth town, from Monday to Friday during term time. A single fare costs just 80p when customers show valid Falmouth University or University of Exeter student or staff ID. This 80p flat fare is also valid for students and staff on Firsts service 41 and 88 services when the U1 isn't running. The U1 service includes late night buses on Thursday and Friday
.

More: First Launches New University Bus Service

With this and the recent takeover of the Truro Park & Ride you really do get the sense of confidence that First have in the Cornwall operation that just does not exist in the Devon side at all. Which makes it all the more surprising that the new livery has yet to make an appearance in Cornwall. I have long had a hunch that we will see something slightly different for First Kernow. It just seems to be a very long time coming!

First Fight back ?

It seems we should know all on Monday when First announce their route changes but from what I have gathered talking to a couple of drivers, and some of the comments left on the site we could well see the following:

Service 6 we know is withdrawn and looks like its to be replaced by changes to the 2 in some way. Service 7 also withdrawn somehow replaced in part by changes to the 93.

Service 3 is an interesting one. It does indeed seem that they are withdrawing from Barne Barton. There has been a lot of suggestions that the route instead will be extended up through Higher St Budeaux to West Park and Honicknowle.

Service 4 believed to be just a timetable change – nothing major

Service 5 we know is being withdrawn with no replacement.

Service 15 – clearly being extended up to Roborough and possibly into Woolwell. Will no longer serve Mainstone / Asda.

Service 83 etc Tavistock. Rumours suggest that First are going to concentrate on the direct service in much the same way at Citybus. It has been suggested that this will mean no more direct buses to Derriford Hospital apart from a few peak runs. This is probably the reason behind the 15 extension as it could then serve as a connecting service to Derriford. Either that or they could offer through tickets on the Park & Ride service run by Target?

Service X80 X81 are withdrawn.

New service 6 to serve Laira / Efford. Still seems an odd choice to me though.

Bravery Honoured

Honour for bus driver who saved man found on fire in car in Plymouth Plymouth Herald

Its great to see the bravery of this bus driver being recognised by his employers.

A First Devon and Cornwall company spokesperson said: "One of our drivers was involved in an incident. The driver, travelling on Service 4 towards Keyham, came across a vehicle on fire.

"On realising that a man was also involved in the fire, he stopped his bus in such a way to shield the scene and protect his passengers, before getting out and assisting the injured man. All of our buses carry fire extinguishers so he had this at his disposal to help.

"The injured man was already out of the car when our driver arrived, but he was on fire.

"Our driver helped to extinguish the flames and then stayed with him, keeping him calm, maintaining his airway and continuing to talk to him until the emergency services arrived.

"We are incredibly proud of our driver's actions. The scene was distressing but he acted quickly, remaining calm under pressure.

changes

Plymouth Citybus has now posted the new timetables for the few routes that are changing on the 6th October,

The new timetables are available HERE

I am sure they will soon correct the small typo which gives the 12 as Torpoint to Plymouth rather than Tavistock – Plymouth.

I wont go into any detail on these changes just yet though as First have posted an interesting note on their web site today

We have registered a number of changes to our network in Plymouth and the surrounding areas from 27 October.
We are currently compiling information on these changes and it will be published on our website, Facebook and Twitter pages from Monday 9 September.

With this in mind I shall be having a closer look at all of these changes when we know exactly what First are planning. If some of the rumours are true then it could be interesting.

In the meantime please continue to leave your comments. This evening we have just passed the 4000 comments mark since the blog started back in 2007. And of these 4000, almost 1000 of them have been since January this year! Shows that there is plenty going on at the moment and that the debate between Citybus and First in particular raises passions on both sides.

Talking of milestones, I will be due to publish post number 2500 shortly. Within the next two weeks probably. Still trying to work out what to post for number 2500!

05 September 2013

Pleasantly Puzzled by Purple

Its all to easy to jump to conclusions based on the very basic details provided by VOSA especially as sometimes it takes a day or two for all the notifications to appear. However first Devon & Cornwall have just posted these changes and bearing in mind the heightened competition in the air these changes will be watched very closely to see if First are going to come out fighting or not. On this first batch the opinion is going to be split right down the middle!

PH0004983/278 Variation Accepted: Operating between THE GEORGE PARK AND RIDE SITE and PLYMOUTH (Royal Parade) given service number PR1 effective from 27-Oct-2013. To amend Timetable.

PH0004983/294 Variation Accepted: Operating between Coypool Park & Ride Site and Royal Parade given service number PR2 effective from 27-Oct-2013. To amend Timetable.

Park & Ride timetable changes so probably nothing major.

PH0004983/31 Cancellation Accepted: Operating between Plymouth Bus Station and Paignton Bus Station given service number X80/X81 effective from 27-Oct-2013.

PH0004983/414 Cancellation Accepted: Operating between Paignton and Torquay given service number X80/X81 effective from 27-Oct-2013.

Well, unless there are some new registrations to come it does appear that First are throwing in the towel to Stagecoach?

PH0004983/32 Variation Accepted: Operating between Tavistock Bus Station and Plymouth Royal Parade given service number 83/83A/84/86/86A effective from 27-Oct-2013. To amend Timetable.

This is no surprise as its the other main area of new competition this time against Plymouth Citybus. A recent comment suggested First would not bother serving Derriford Hospital so they could concentrate on the main Plymouth – Tavistock route against Citybus. I hope thats wrong as I feel that serving Derriford Hospital will keep a lot of passengers loyal to First. Of course its always a balancing act as it does add a lot of time to the journey.

PH0004983/328 Variation Accepted: Operating between Plymouth Royal Parade and Keyham given service number 4 effective from 27-Oct-2013. To amend Timetable.

There has also been an increased presence from Citybus on at least part of this service in the St Levans Valley.

PH0004983/333 Cancellation Accepted: Operating between Plymouth Royal Parade and Mount Gould given service number 5 effective from 27-Oct-2013

I have always been amazed that this service has lasted as long as it has!

PH0004983/336 Variation Accepted: Operating between Plymouth Royal Parade and St Budeaux Square given service number 3 effective from 27-Oct-2013. To amend Route and Timetable.

This could be interesting as its up against the main 21 21A service. At first I wondered if the St Budeaux loop was being cut out and the bus was just turning at The Square but that could just be down to the terminus being after the loop. Possibly reading too much into that.

PH0004983/337 Variation Accepted: Operating between Plymouth Royal Parade and Mount Batten given service number 2 effective from 27-Oct-2013. To amend Route and Timetable.

Will have to wait and see if this is anything significant

PH0004983/389 -Variation Accepted: Operating between Plymouth, Royal Parade and Kingsbridge Quay given service number 93 effective from 27-Oct-2013. To amend Route and Timetable.

I would expect to see changes to the Kingsbridge – Dartmouth section too, which is why I think there is more to come over the next day or two?

PH0004983/396 Variation Accepted: Operating between Plymouth City Centre and Roborough given service number 15 effective from 27-Oct-2013. To amend Route and Timetable.

Now this is a change as currently the 15 does not serve Roborough. It could just be an extension of the current half of the runs which turn at Derriford. It just means extending up through past Marjons to The George Park & Ride site. I hope it is just that and not a re-routing away from Asda / Mainstone. Or it could be extended from Mainstone up to The George? I catch this service a lot so will be watching out for the new timetables!

PH0004983/330 Cancellation Accepted: Operating between Plymouth Royal Parade and Blackstone Close given service number 6 effective from 27-Oct-2013.

PH0004983/434 Cancellation Accepted: Operating between Plymouth, Royal Parade and Elburton Village given service number 7 effective from 27-Oct-2013

I can only assume that there is another new route planned to take on some of this work as I cant see them just pulling out of these routes in their operating heartland?

PH0004983/463 Registration Accepted Starting Point: Plymouth, Royal Parade Finish Point: Laira Via: Lipson Vale, Efford Service Number: 6/Purple Service Type: Normal Stopping Effective Date: 27-OCT-2013 Other Details: Monday to Saturday except public holidays

This appears to be a copy of the current Citybus 8/9 service which is busy but an odd choice to start competing with? I also note the route number is described as Purple which suggests we will be seeing a revival of route branding again.

Is this just the first of a batch of new routes? Certainly from the notices posted so far they will have a fair few drivers and buses available as there are more cancellations than additional duties. The new Purple route strongly suggests that there will be other colours available and that some effort will be put into marketing them. I for one hope that this is indeed the case. As long as these notices are indeed just the first batch of changes and there are some more new registrations to follow on VOSA over the next few days then the fun will soon begin!

As always your comments will be very welcome. What do you suspect is coming up?

First Derriford

999869_10151769528153340_367639746_nFirst Devon & Cornwall have produced a very handy little booklet for buses serving Derriford:
”We've created a great new guide to bus routes serving Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Derriford hospital bus service guide

Life after Plymouth ATK161W

Received this photo from my friend Pete Jarman recently:
Found this ex Plymouth Atlantean in a field at Wymeswold, Leics last week and wondered if you know much about its history? Open Top Bus website has it with Robers Tours, Hugglescote, Leics but I did see reference to it being attempted at preservation (couldn’t get links to work) Peter J

I am sure our friends at the PCTPG will know more about the status of this one?
