Happy New Year

Just a quick note to wish all my readers a Very Happy New Year for 2012.

I will resume proper posting again from the second of January after this much needed break!

Not everyone has taken a break so there is still plenty for you to read in the meantime….

Festive Fayre

106Taking into account significant increases in its operating costs, First is revising some bus fares across its network from Sunday 1 January. The changes affect all standard single and return fares as well as many day, week and month, 3Month, 6Month and annual tickets. Fares for the Plymouth Park and Ride service, which First operates on a commercial basis, have also been reviewed.

From Sunday 1 January single and return bus fares will be increased by between 10 and 50 pence each.

Talking about the changes, Robbie Lamerton, General Manager for First in Devon and Cornwall, says: "We understand that this will not be welcome news, but we need to revise some of our fares to ensure that they adequately cover the costs we face in operating buses in this part of the world.
"Over recent years there has been increasing pressure on our business as we contend with rising fuel costs and reductions in the level and type of funding we are able to access from other sources. The expected reduction from April 2012 in the Bus Service Operators Grant, which partly refunds some of the excise duty we pay on the fuel we buy and which has historically been in place as a subsidy for fare-paying passengers, means we must also act now to mitigate the impact of that change on our business as a whole.

"We have kept the increases as small as we have been able to, and where possible have frozen some of the most popular fares.

"We want people to continue using our services and we have done what we can to keep the cost of multi journey tickets as low as possible, making it cheaper for those people who use our buses the most often. As a company we believe that the cost of bus travel remains competitive, particularly when compared with cost of other types of transport, for instance the total cost involved in running a private car (particularly when parking costs, insurance, tax and depreciation are also considered), or the cost of taking a taxi.

"Our season ticket products particularly represent great value for money, rewarding loyalty and significantly cutting the cost compared with the standard walk on fares, for instance a customer in Plymouth can enjoy unlimited daily travel in the area for as little as £1.43 a day. We would urge our customers to look at these products, taking advantage of all they have to offer."

For more information about all the changes being made or to find out more about the various season tickets products that are available, call our customer services team on: 0845 600 1420.

Businesses in the region are also encouraged to consider joining the First Corporate Travel Club. Membership of the club is free and available to any company, regardless of size. Having joined the club, members " and their staff - can take advantage of significant savings on a number of season ticket products. For more information about the Corporate Travel Club contact Steve Hobbs, Commercial Business Manager, on 02380 714824.

Andrew Wickham has been appointed the new Managing Director at Go South Coast, Go-Ahead's bus company which includes Wilts and Dorset, Bluestar and Southern Vectis.

Andrew, who takes up the role with immediate effect, succeeds Alex Carter who has left the business. Andrew was previously MD at Plymouth Citybus.

David Brown, Go-Ahead Group Chief Executive said: "I am delighted that Andrew has accepted the role. He has an excellent track record at Plymouth Citybus and will bring extensive experience and knowledge of the bus industry to his position.  I would also like to thank Alex for what he has achieved at Go South Coast."

Andrew, who was Operations Director at Go South Coast from 2003 to 2009 said:"I am pleased to be returning to Go South Coast and look forward to the challenges of my new role. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the fantastic team at Plymouth Citybus and wish them well for the future."

Go-Ahead will be looking for a successor to Andrew at Plymouth Citybus.

Andrew has been Managing Director of Plymouth Citybus since December 2009, when Go-Ahead acquired the bus company. Before that he was Operations Director at Go South Coast and also spent three years working for Go-Ahead as its Development Manager. Andrew joined the bus industry in 1987 working for Brighton Borough Transport Ltd and was at London General when Go-Ahead acquired the company in 1995.

Number One

With the end of the step entrance Darts earlier this year (apart from 132!) the next batch of buses to be replaced will be the first batch of low floor Dennis Darts 1-5/7-10/12 N101-105/7-10/12UTT. April 2012 sees the arrival of 10 new Volvo / Wright buses for Citybus which all being well will see these buses off. (Plans can change!)
When it was announced that these new buses had been ordered it set off quite a debate around the question of preservation of one of these low floor buses:
"wonder if any of the Ns will be preserved" A far more worthy cause then yet another Atlantean..
"I think the PCTPG will definitely preserve one of them at least; they were the first fleet of low floor buses to enter service with PCB"
"And you would want to preserve one of the N reg Darts because ............ They are hardly an iconic vehicle."
"I know they aren't anywhere near as special as an Atlantean, however they were the first fleet of low floor vehicles to enter service with PCB. The ones most likely to be preserved are the ones registered on June 7th 1996, rather than the ones registered on July 1st 1996. If that's the case, then the preserved ones would probably be either 1,2,4 or 5; all these were registered on June 7th, 3,7,8,9,10 and 12 were all registered on 01/07/1997"
"Like them or not, The Dennis Dart is responsible for near single-handedly changing the landscape of the entire industry not once, but twice. Firstly by offering a modern and lightweight replacement at precisely the right time for thousands of worn out single deckers, and also capitalising and building upon the gains made by the minibus revolution. Secondly, the Dart SLF was the first example of a truly successful low floor bus in the UK, in not just reliability but also operator and passenger appeal. I'd rate the importance of a Dart over an Atlantean any day.."
I must admit I agree with this last comment. As boring as it is for the enthusiast, you only have to spend a few minutes on Royal Parade to see just how important the low floor Dennis Dart has been to Plymouth. Both Citybus and First have a substantial fleet of them which will no doubt be serving Plymouth for many years to come. I have always preferred the simple lines of this first batch of Low Floor Pointers over the Pointer 2 body which graces the rest of the Citybus fleet. I do hope that one of these buses does make it into preservation, and I guess number 1 is the significant one, if only as a result of its fleet number.
Plymouth Citybus 001 N101UTT
It will be interesting to see what fleet numbers are carried by the new Volvos next year. It would be nice to see them start at 101 but we will have to wait and see.

*50p booking fee still applies.

It certainly seems like a good idea but 10000 seats isn't really a lot so there cant be that many available from Plymouth so good luck in finding any. I must admit I have not kept that up-to-date withy Megabus. This is is part due to the awful web site!

Its a real shame that they do not publish full proper timetables for their routes rather than just expecting you to search for specific journeys. If you know where and when they go its a lot easier to plan and book. Thats my opinon anyway. That said one day I will have a go and do a Megabus run somewhere

2 years on and new buses for Citybus

1 December marked the second anniversary of the Go Ahead Group’s acquisition of Plymouth Citybus.  Managing Director Andrew Wickham, who has overseen the transition from being publicly owned to privately owned from day one, says that he is proud of the many achievements, especially in the on-going growth in passenger numbers. The last 12 months showed a 4% increase which means over ½ million more passenger journeys were made on the network compared to the previous 12 months

He estimates that over £1 million has been invested over the 2 years since the acquisition.  The largest share of the investment has been allocated to the introduction of more modern, easy access buses to reduce the problems faced by wheelchair users and the infirm,  the staged rebranding of the buses with contemporary livery, and two new coaches for Plymouth Citycoach.

A further £1.6 million order for brand new buses for spring 2012 has been made.

Its good to see Citybus getting some new buses again. No idea yet of what they will be but Go Ahead do seem quite keen on the Volvo Wright combination at the moment…

alive and well

Former Plymouth Atlantean 130 STK130T reportedly scrapped 5-6 years ago has in fact turned up alive and well. Just as 129 STK 129T IS FACING THE CUTTERS TOURCH FUNNY HOW THINGS WORK OUT.

Anyone interested in her on going preservation must act reasonably quickly and get in touch with Ralph Delbridge via the Plymouthcitytransport preservation group. We look forward to hearing from any interested parties.
