Fleet news 1970

I was lucky to be given a small collection of old Buses Magzines from random dates in the 1970's so while I am still internettally challenged I bring you Fleetnews from Buses 178 (Jan 1970)...

Plymouth:

23 JJY523 a 1954 Leyland PD2/12 with Leyland H30/26R bodywork has been withdrawn from service and is now in use as a trainer. Similar 378 HJY278 has been acquired by the Shrangri-La Holiday Camp near Clacton-on-Sea and is used to provide free transport during the holiday season.

Meanwhile up the road Exeter City Council have agreed to sell their 65 bus fleet to the National Bus Company for £190,000 subject to negotiations with the aim to complete on the 1st April 1970.

More of these old updates over the coming weeks as I for one find them fascinating!

Solong

It seems that the Optare Solo has not been a big hit with Citybus, or it may just be a case that there is a greater need elsewhere. At least 212 has already been noted in Poole as Damory Coaches 3713.
211 &213 had been reported as being out of service while 210 has been on training duties in August with Citybus.
I had one report saying 3 were heading to the South Coast fleets but I would be surprised if we keep just one in Plymouth

Tamar Valley Take Off

THE TAMAR Valley Train line is one of the fastest growing branch lines in Britain.
New figures published by the Association of Train operating Companies (ATOC) state that the Plymouth to Gunnislake and the Liskeard to Looe, Looe Valley lines have seen increases of more than 20 per cent.
Passengers made 169,388 journeys on the Tamar Valley Line between April 2010 and March 2011, an increase of 21.8 per cent over the same period in 2007 and 2008. This gave the line ninth place in the branch line league table. On the Looe Valley Line, 95,446 journeys were made between April 2010 and March 2011, an increase of 23.8 per cent over 2007 and 2008, ranking the line eighth in the table.

Is it fare?

Catching up with news from the past week we start with the new Citybus fares...
We have revised a couple of our fares, with the following changes being effective as of 4th September 2011.
We have NOT made any changes to any other tickets or fares apart from the following transfer tickets and single and return fares on some price bands.
Below are the revised fares as of 4th September.
Adult Single Fares
£1.30, £1.60, £2.00 or £2.30
Adult Return Fares
£1.70, £2.30, £2.90 or £3.20
Young Person’s / Student Single Fares
We are making all our young person's / student single fares a flat fare of £1.00*
Young Person’s / Student Return Fares
We are making all our young person's / student return fares a flat fare of £1.50*
Transfer Tickets
Adult £3.00 - Young Person's / Student £2.30
*Young Person’s / Student fares above are not available from the driver before 9.30am. Below we have highlighted tickets we have launched on the key to enable reduced rate travel before 9.30am.
Plymouth Citybus 24 August 2011

It is interesting what they have done with the young persons fare with a flat £1 single / £1.50 return. This is of course after 9.30 before then adult fares will be charged - which is when they are on the way to school! Might make the journey to work in the morning slightly nicer with less school kids on the bus?
This is of course the second price rise this year.
I will catch up on the recent links with the next post...

We apologise for any inconvenience caused whilst we launch our new key.
Plymouth Citybus

The Plymouth launch of The key does seem to have been quite Low Key (pun intended) compared with elsewhere in the Go Ahead Group. Go Northern have a few buses in a special overall advert livery for The Key while we just have a few normal adverts carried on a few buses. At Derriford Hospital staff received an email on Friday advising us to check with the company if we hadn't received our new pass. I only received mine on Friday and I know other staff were also still waiting for them at that time. Citybus have said that there will be a period of grace where they will still accept the old passes as I am sure many passengers will be unaware of the new Key and the need to change their passes. The first they will know is when they use their pass today and the driver points out they need a new one!
Many will wonder just why they need a new pass as in use the new pass does not seem much different to the older one. Of course this does assume that the new machines work properly! I guess I will find out on my way to work today...
I am sure there will be issues with the new cards this week. Any new technology product these days seems prone to breakdown. Oxford was just one of the areas where problems with the new pass hit the local headlines for a few weeks.
As I said Go North East launched their Key with a lot more publicity including a series of Flash mobs:

    Hookways Going?

    Really sad news:
A It seems that Hookways is facing going into liquidation.
    Hookways 1434HP
Hookways, which has more than 50 vehicles and employs 70 people, was due to go into liquidation on 23 August, liquidators Begbies Traynor said. The Exeter-based firm, which was started in 1929 and is also a tour operator, had been hit by continuous rises in fuel costs, they said. Creditors had been informed and they were also keen to talk to anyone interested in the business, they added. The company operates in Cornwall, Devon and Dorset. Ian Walker and John Kelly, of Begbies Traynor, said: "It is no surprise that the sector, hit by the very high cost of fuel, is facing such severe difficulties. "Hookways has survived previous recessions but have found this one just too difficult."

    Grim outlook for Cornish Buses

Cornwall backs down, but cuts still on

Cornwall county council is proposing a phased reduction in concessionary
fare reimbursement starting in October, when the level will drop from
73.5 to 60 per cent. It will then be further reduced to 50 per cent from
April next year. It had last month announced a cut from 73.5 to 44.3 per
cent to be backdated to 1 April 2011 - a decision it quickly reversed
following the threat of legal action from outraged operators. The new
figures were produced last week after a hastily-arranged meeting between
    the council and the operators.

Mark Howarth, managing director of leading Cornish operator Western
Greyhound, warns that this may not be enough to prevent widespread
service reductions. "Cornwall is blaming central government and
government is saying local authorities need to decide on their
priorities. Who is taking responsibility for this fiasco as everyone is
passing the buck? I am engaging with our local MPs to see [transport
minister] Norman Baker; he needs to know the effects of this policy and
how many people will suffer as a result.

"In July 1971, there were funding cuts and the old Western National
pulled out of vast swathes of Cornwall as a result. Now, exactly 40
years on, it appears the same thing may happen again if sense doesn't
prevail. I am pleased that Cornwall has rescinded the original proposal
and has come to the table, but even the revised proposals will mean
    widespread withdrawal of services."
