Holiday Bus ODV203W

Renown posted this excellent shot on his Flickr account a while back but I thought I would save it for a Holiday so here it is... Still toiling away. ©Renown
"I've mentioned before my admiration of this machine and the people who keep it operational... their cause not always aided by the punishment meted out to it by odd members of staff. There can be few thirty odd year old buses in the UK who's daily cycle sees them worked as hard as ex Plymouth East Lancs bodied Leyland Atlantean ODV 203W thrashing up and over the Llanberis Pass from both sides hourly. Again as I've said before, absolutely excellent value at a quid each way... try it out! ;-)"

Car Free Day

Plymouth City Council is challenging motorists to gear up for Devon Car Free Day on Wednesday 22 September by finding a fun, green way to travel.
Car-Free ComicsThe sustainable transport team is joining forces with colleagues in Devon County and Torbay Councils to promote the annual event, which encourages people to leave the car at home for the day and give more environmentally friendly options a go.
The three councils want as many people as possible to take part in the event and help cut congestion and pollution in the process. As an extra incentive they are offering prizes for ‘best team effort’ and ‘most creative way of travelling’.
If walking, cycling, car-sharing or travelling by bus or train are just too ‘pedestrian’ for you why not follow in the footsteps of pollution-busters from previous years, who have travelled to work by horse and cart, scooter, skateboard, sedan chair, canoe, wheelie bin, wheelbarrow and even on stilts!
Prizes for Plymouth residents are:
Best team effort
Adult or child dayrider tickets from Plymouth Citybus for each member of the team Most creative way of travelling
Two First Class return rail tickets to London (or an alternative destination of your choice on the First Great Western network), courtesy of First Great Western Trains
OR a six-month First Devon and Cornwall bus pass worth £400 (valid on all First bus services in Devon and Cornwall except those going into Somerset or Dorset)
Whichever one of these two prizes remains (the rail tickets or the bus pass) will then go up for grabs in a free prize draw for all entrants, where a winner will be drawn at random.
Full details on how to enter can be found here To be in with a chance of winning email publictransport@plymouth.gov.uk by Friday 24 September with your travel plans for the day, along with your name, address and contact number.
Local bus companies are also supporting the event with special ticket offers on the day.

First is offering a better-than-half-price adult First Day Devon ticket for just £3 instead of the normal £6.80. To take advantage of the offer you will need a voucher, available on our Devon Car Free Day page or by calling the sustainable transport team on 01752 668000. Full terms and conditions are printed on the voucher.

Plymouth Citybus will also be lowering the cost of its DayRider ticket from £3.30 to £3 for adults and from £2.30 to £2 for children on Devon Car Free Day. A family ticket will cost £5. These prices will apply to all Plymouth Citybus services operating on the day.

The first ride

I knew the bendy bus was being placed into service in the afternoon but was really lucky with my timing as I came across her just after noon and took a few photos while she sat on Royal Parade... Go-Ahead BL57OXP MAL112 Go-Ahead BL57OXP MAL112 Go-Ahead BL57OXP MAL112 Go-Ahead BL57OXP MAL112 It was then the driver informed me that she was due out on the 12:15 departure so I just had time for a few more photos and then a quick walk up to the bus stop for her first public run. Go-Ahead BL57OXP MAL112 where I promptly took the back seat and sat back for the ride. Go-Ahead BL57OXP MAL112 There were few takers on this first run but then we were following a First 12 all the way into Plympton. The bus coped very well with the sharp turns along the route and also had a good turn of speed along the Embankment and had no problem with the few hills it came across. Certainly better than a Dart! Passengers seemed to enjoy it and it certainly turned a few heads as it made its way through Plympton. One young lad made me laugh as he got really excited and proclaimed it to be the coolest bus he had ever seen! Sadly my Zak didnt get a go as I couldnt get the timings right.
I did take some short video clips which I will put together and post later.

Quackers

CCTV once again comes to the rescue of a bus driver in this news story from Cornwall...

A BUS company boss has defended the driver of a double-decker bus who ran over a mother duck and one of her nine babies on a Newquay road.

rubber duck

Managing director of Western Greyhound Mark Howarth was saddened to learn about the deaths, but said the driver acted within the law. He spoke out after an animal-lover criticised the lack of punishment given to a bus driver involved in the incident last Tuesday morning.

Anne-Marie Bradshaw told of her horror at witnessing an explosion of feathers as the mother duck disappeared beneath the wheels of the double-decker

She said Western Greyhound's decision not to punish the driver was ridiculous. "The driver had plenty of time to move out the way, but chose to drive over some of them instead. "I was shocked. My family and friends are shocked. Yet Western Greyhound decides not to punish. It's ridiculous.

Mr Howarth said they had investigated the incident and concluded that the driver could not have avoided striking the ducks.

He said: "The law states that bus drivers must ensure the comfort and safety of passengers is not compromised. "We have closed circuit television at the front and rear of our buses and could see it was raining, which made the road slippery, and the ducks just ran out in front of the bus. "We do not feel the driver has done anything wrong as passenger safety is our main concern." This is Cornwall

I particularly like the first tongue in cheek (I hope!) comment on this story which I feel sums everything up nicely

The action of the Bus Driver was wrong, the poor mother and her ducklings,he should have swerved to miss them, the fact that the bus may have overturned,or hit a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction, possibly killing several people is not important, the ducks would have been saved.

Someone has also helpfully provided a recipe for duck!

Citybus Timetable changes 5 September 2010

Following changes to bus services on 25 July, Management at Plymouth Citybus have confirmed that an additional round of changes to routes and timetables will be introduced from Sunday 5th September 2010. Many routes will see improvements to Sunday daytime services funded by the withdrawal of some evening services that do not attract enough passengers. Managing Director Andrew Wickham explains that the changes are essential to improve and safeguard the long term sustainability of the services offered by Plymouth’s premier bus operator.
“A large percentage of changes we have announced are simply to improve the timing and reliability of services to customers. Timetables need to be adjusted from time to time to allow for increased traffic congestion, new road layouts and changes in people’s travelling requirements. Some are also changed to enable bus users to make better connections to other services. We will be disappointed if we do not see an increase in passenger numbers based upon these changes. Early indications are that our July service changes have seen positive passenger growth.”
The company hopes that the changes made to improve services will see results similar to that of the changes to their Plympton services made in June that has resulted in a 17% increase in passenger numbers within the first 4 weeks.
“Other cuts to services are essential if we are to preserve the 421 jobs at the company and ensure that we can meet the transport needs of people in the region by diverting our limited driver and vehicle resources to meet areas of demand,” said Andrew Wickham.
A total of 25 Plymouth Citybus services will see changes to either routes or timetables.
Services with changes to time tables or routes on Sundays include service 5, 5A, 8, 9, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 26, 26B, 29, 34, 35, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 46, 47, 50, 61 and 62A.
Services removed but replaced on Sundays with improved services are the 24 - now covered by an improved 23 service and the 62A is enhanced with an improved Service 61.
The only services to be cut completely are the 33D and the 133. Service 34 will partly replace these buses. Service 46 and 47 is to be withdrawn on Sundays and Bank Holidays. This is partly replaced with improved Service 26, 42 and the Service 50.

Not so (pennycome)Quick Citybus

PLYMOUTH Citybus has been forced to delay returning to a controversially scrapped route after a Government body stepped in.
Elderly passengers in the Pennycomequick area hit out at the firm for slashing the 45/A service last month, saying they would feel "imprisoned" without the vital link. Bosses reacted by agreeing to re-route the 46/47 service from September 5, taking away its Mainstone link in exchange for putting buses back into Stuart Road and Wilton Street but their decision has now been halted by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (Vosa), which oversees bus services.
Vosa expressed concerns about Citybus withdrawing from Mainstone, despite the area also being served by the Number 15 service. Citybus managing director Andrew Wickham said: "Plymouth City Council did support the change, but Vosa did not want the change to happen at less than eight weeks' notice, as it includes removing 46/47 from Mainstone. "We understand Vosa's concern over a section of bus route being withdrawn at less than eight weeks' notice, and have therefore put the planned date back two weeks." From September 20, the 46/47 service will also be restored in Peter's Park Lane, Kings Tamerton. Because the route is now longer than before, bosses were forced to make changes elsewhere and chose Mainstone due to its alternative service. Passengers who complained of the 45/A being scrapped in Paradise Road will be left with the option of two stops in nearby Fore Street and Devonport Road from the same date. Full story This is PlymouthVOSA blocks Citybus move

Archive copy of the article
I must admit I expected trouble regarding the withdrawal of the bus from Mainstone but not from this source! As long as First keep going on the 15 then at least Mainstone do have a service still. They have of course already lost their evening and Sunday services on the 46/47 and will loose the Sunday service on the 15 in a couple of weeks time. I am sure they wont be the only area of Plymouth with that problem...

Travel Club

A new initiative designed to cut the annual travel costs of city centre workers while simultaneously encouraging them to use public transport to get to and from work is being launched in Plymouth this week (10 August) in a move that is expected to be universally welcomed by business leaders and their employees.
The Plymouth City Centre Travel Club will officially be launched on Tuesday 10 August. The result of a joint partnership between First Devon and Cornwall and the Plymouth City Centre Company, the travel club offers its members the chance to cut their employees annual travel costs by up to £332 each if they currently travel by bus*.
Any company - regardless of size - can join the Plymouth City Centre Travel Club, provided they are based in Plymouth City Centre. Staff can start reaping the rewards as soon as their employers have signed up. There is no cost to join.
For someone who buys weekly or monthly bus tickets to commute to and from work, the potential savings from the new scheme are immense. Members of the Plymouth City Travel Club will be able to get FirstYear Plymouth tickets (offering unlimited travel within the city limits, and travel on the citys Park and Ride buses) for just £396 each. This offers a saving of £332 a year for someone who currently buys FirstWeek tickets to commute to work, £228 each for those who currently buy FirstMonth tickets, or £124 for those who already buy annual bus tickets. Those buying the discounted tickets can pay for them over 12 months by credit card or direct debit.
Discounted tickets offering travel across the wider PlymouthPlus zone (which extends to Yelverton, Ivybridge, Wembury and the Rame Peninsula) and tickets offering unlimited travel across the whole of Devon and Cornwall are also available through the scheme.
For more information about the Plymouth City Travel Club, or to find out how your company can join email Peter Burridge, Commercial Business Manager, First Devon and Cornwall, at peter.burridge@firstgroup.com or log onto www.firstgroup.com/devon for more information.
Travel Club Benefits
First 32716 W716RHT
This certainly looks like a good idea which might be of use to some people who work in the City Centre. It is always good to see business and bus companies working together like this. It is a shame though that it only seems to be available with First. It would be a lot more popular if it could work with both bus companies like the existing Plymouth City Council scheme which we benefit from in the hospital. That said this scheme does seem to be cheaper. Lets hope it does work and it gets taken up by good numbers of people working in the City Centre.
Of course it does also beg the question - if your route gets withdrawn would you then get a refund on the ticket? It would be nice to see some sort of guarantee given at the time of purchase that refunds (pro rata) for tickets would be given if your route is withdrawn or substantially altered to make it unsuitable as a travel option. This is not a dig at First - all our bus companies are cutting back at the moment. this sort of guarantee should be given on all extended bus tickets.

Dawlish Coaches RIP

Dawlish Coaches R 2 AVC
©Ian Kirby 3rd November 2007

The Directors of Dawlish Coaches Limited convened a Board Meeting today Tuesday 10 August 2010 with a resolution to place the Company into Creditors Voluntary Liquidation as from 1 September 2010 and have instructed Messrs Begbies Traynor to assist the Directors in placing the Company into Liquidation.

This is the sad notice which now appears on the Dawlish Coaches web site. Dawlish Coaches are regular visitors to Plymouth especially when operating for Majestic Tours. 37 members of staff including drivers have been made redundant as a result. I hope that they manage to pick up new employment before too long.

Taxibuses and Target

Its not just First who are cutting back, The Taxibuses are being cut back to with the St Budeaux services already gone and the Northern Connect taxibuses also being culled shortly. Our drivers were telling us back in July that the service was due to shut down from this week, although that never happened. The St Budeaux routes did shut as as planned but the 224 continues for the time being although all no one expects it to continue for much longer. There have been lots of rumours but no official confirmation of anything, even the drivers are not sure what is going on.
Although run by Taxifast it seems that these routes are administered by Target Travel who have cancelled a load of their services in September including the popular 52A.

On the 29th July we get two route registrations pop up for target Travel:

PH0006742/40 - ROBERT JOHN RISK, 4 ARCADIA, ELBURTON, PLYMOUTH, PL9 8EF Registration Accepted by SN Starting Point: Whitleigh Finish Point: Estover Service Number: 44B Service Type: Normal Stopping Effective Date: 13-SEP-2010 Other Details: Mondays to Fridays

PH0006742/41 - ROBERT JOHN RISK, 4 ARCADIA, ELBURTON, PLYMOUTH, PL9 8EF Registration Accepted by SN Starting Point: Southway Finish Point: Belliver Service Number: 57 Service Type: Normal Stopping Effective Date: 13-SEP-2010 Other Details: Mondays to Fridays

So at least it appears that Target are not giving up on all their bus services, just most of them! There are no details of these two routes available anywhere yet but it looks like they could be replacing the Taxifast services in part at least, although there is no sign of any official cancellation for the taxibuses yet.

I have only just seen two other interesting applications on the VOSA site as I have been researching for this post:

PH1098326/1 - MARK LEGASSICK T/A ST BUDEAUX TAXI BUS, 60 SAVAGE ROAD, PLYMOUTH, PL5 1BR Registration Accepted by SN Starting Point: St Budeaux Sqaure, Plymouth Devon Finish Point: St Budeaux Square, Plymouth Devon Service Number: 223 Service Type: Hail & Ride Effective Date:

09-AUG-2010 Other Details: Mondays to Fridays only (except public holidays) Every 20 mins.
PH1098325/1 - MICHAEL FAHY T/A ST BEAUDEX TAXI BUS, 80 OCEAN STREET, PLYMOUTH, PL2 2DL Registration Accepted by SN Starting Point: St Budeaux Square, Plymouth Devon Finish Point: St Budeaux Square, Plymouth Devon Service Number: 223 Service Type: Hail & Ride Effective Date: 09-AUG-2010 Other Details: Monday to Fridays only (Except public holidays) every 20 mins.

So it appears that the St Budeaux taxibuses are still operating, just not by Taxifast. I presume its to the same timetable as the old services and I assume its still administered by Target Travel. Certainly the 222/ 223 timetables are still up on the Target web site although bot advertise a ten minute frequency so maybe it has changed, who knows!

In all this confusion we get a nice little news item in This is Plymouth last week:

A PETITION has been handed to Parliament in protest at the scrapping of a taxibus in Plymouth, branding it a disgrace.
More than 250 signatures were presented to the House of Commons urging Government action to halt the withdrawal of the service running from Glenholt to the city centre, which campaigners say is used by residents to go to the doctors, shops, and community facilities.

I am not entirely sure what they mean by this as there was no taxibus service to the City centre!

The loss of the service will cause "major inconvenience" say opponents of the move. Alison Seabeck the MP for Plymouth, Moor View, says the cuts come amid continuing concern over the reduction in bus routes and services offered by Citybus since the Conservative-led council privatised the service last year.

No mention that First have also been cutting services or that services would probably have been cut back by Citybus anyway even if not sold

The petition states people "are unhappy with the decision to withdraw the taxibus service that serves the residents in the north of Plymouth" and notes that people in St Budeaux and Weston Mill use the service "to access their GP surgery, dentist, shops and other community facilities". "I was also shocked to learn of the withdrawal of the taxibus service in the north of the city. I know how much many local people rely on this service to get them to the shops or the doctors.

"People, especially the elderly, fear the isolation caused by the withdrawal of these links. The failure of Taxi Fast to consult local residents or councillors is a disgrace.

There is of course no obligation for them to consult,. If it is losing them money then that are well within their rights to cancel. it is then down to the council to decide if its worth supporting

"I will continue to campaign for a better bus service in Plymouth and oppose local cuts in services. We've already seen that the bus companies will back down if local people make a stand as they did for route 45/A and I commit to working with residents to keep these services running."

The people of Mainstone wont be so happy about that as they loose their Citybus service next month just after First have cut their Sunday service. There is clearly a lot still hanging in the air at the moment about what services will be cut. There will clearly be a lot more angry passengers as they find out their routes get cut. Hopefully there will be decent information available in plenty of time. Citybus and First will have up to date timetables and information available, but will Target / Taxibuses?

BUS routes in Southway and Ernesettle will be withdrawn due to dwindling customer numbers caused by unemployment, First Devon and Cornwall said.
First 69219 MX56AEJ What would Casper say about these changes? Ernesettle will soon be seeing the end of Caspers bus...

Marc Reddy, managing director of First Devon and Cornwall, said: "Over the past year, we've seen rising unemployment, and fewer people going out for shopping and leisure purposes. "These changes in the wider economy have had a knock-on effect on our business as fewer people have needed to travel. "Acknowledging these changes, we have adjusted our own networks to meet the current level of demand, reducing the frequency of some services where necessary, or taking some specific journeys out of the timetables where it is shown that very few people use them. "In two instances, we are withdrawing entire routes – this is because they have not performed in line with our initial expectations since their introduction last October.
"To help people plan their journeys, we will make new timetable information available approximately two weeks before the changes come into force."

Service 12 (City Centre – Chaddlewood via Marsh Mills and Plympton Ridgeway): The route of this service will change slightly from August 29. Buses will no longer stop in Mayflower Street from this date — instead, they will operate along the Viaduct and Royal Parade only. On Sundays, the frequency of buses will change slightly,(!) from one every half an hour to one every hour.

Service 15 (City Centre – Estover / Mainstone via Crownhill and Derriford): The Monday to Saturday timetable of this service will be changed slightly from August 29, with adjustments made to improve the overall punctuality and reliability of the buses on the route, said a spokesman for First. All journeys on a Sunday will be removed from the timetable.

The new timetables for the 15 and 12 are not posted on site yet so its not possible to see what they mean by 'changed slightly' for the 15, especially as the same phrase is used for the cutting of the Sunday service on the 12 from 30 mins to 60 mins frequency

U dont go there anymore

First have now revealed the timetable changes due at the end of this month:
Changes to services in Plymouth from 28/29th August 2010
ugobus service 12 (City - Chaddlewood)
A new service 12 timetable will be in operation from Sunday 29 August operating up to every 12 minutes from Monday to Saturday and hourly on Sundays and Public Holidays.
The City Centre routing of service 12 will also be altered slightly. From Exeter Street and St Andrews Cross instead of serving Charles Street, Mayflower Street and Western Approach, service 12 will continue along the Viaduct down Royal Parade, around Derrys Cross roundabout and back up Royal Parade (to stop A11).
Service 15 (City - Estover/Mainstone)
Unfortunately due to a lower demand than we had hoped from (and including) Sunday 29th August Sunday Public Holiday journeys will be withdrawn. From Monday to Saturday service 15 will continue to operate a 20 minute frequency between the City, Mutley, Crownhill, Derriford Hospital, Estover and Mainstone.
Service 13 (City - Ernesettle)
Service 13 will cease operation after its last journey on Saturday 28 August 2010. Wed like to thank those who supported and used service 13 and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Service 17 (City - Southway)
Service 17 will cease operation after its last journey on Saturday 28 August 2010. Wed like to thank those who supported and used service 17 and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Preserving the past

Yesterdays posting was all about buses which may serve with Plymouth Citybus in the future so today's is about preserving some of the buses that have served Citybus in the past. The Plymouth City Transport Preservation Group seems to be going from strength to strength over the last few years and now has quite a collection of former Citybus vehicles

Plymouth Citybus 131 STK131T PCTPG

Over on my sister site Plymothian Transit Extra you can find the current 'fleet list' for the group as it stands at the moment. These pages will generally be updated as any changes are made to the fleet.
The group has its eyes on yet more buses and currently has first refusal on the following:

9 NDR509J Leyland Atlantean Park Royal
125 STK125T Leyland Atlantean Roe open top
154 ATK154W Leyland Atlantean East Lancs open top
159 ODV203W Leyland Atlantean East Lancs open top
161 ATK161W Leyland Atlantean East Lancs open top

I for one really hope we do see NDR509J back in Plymouth!

Bendy Bus for Plymouth Trials

Bndy ©Watpix (Creative commons)

I can now confirm that Plymouth Citybus will finally be getting a Mercedes Citaro bendy bus for one a week trial to see if they could possibly be useful in Plymouth. At the moment it is planned to arrive in Plymouth on Sunday 22nd August and following a day of testing around Plymouth it is hoped to put it into service from Tuesday and then will stay for the rest of the week. I believe the bus might be used on service 21 and other routes during the week but we will have to wait and see. I guess a lot depends on the days testing before they put it into service. I am actually off work that week so should be able to have a go - my son is certainly looking forward to it as he loves the bendy buses - the highlight of his last trip to London!

Gone Ahead to the Isle of Wight

Plymouth Citybus 305 M305KOD
Seen back in July 2009 M305KOD

Being part of a large national group like Go-Ahead does have advantages when it comes to sourcing extra buses, and Citybus have already received Dennis Darts and Optare Solos from within the group and more Dennis Darts are due later as part of the plan to become a low floor fleet within the next six months or so. The traffic is not all one way though as 305 M305KOD has left the fleet and by the time you read this will be on the Isle of Wight as part of the Southern Vectis fleet. It will look good in the blue coach livery.

UPDATE: It seems as if there was a last minute change of plan or something as the coach that has arrived at Southern Vectis turns out to be 304 M304KOD and NOT 305 as pictured above. Not sure if 305 will be joining her later or not at this stage.

Lets Party

One aspect that surprised me at last weeks bus rally was just how much the limo business seems to have grown with a a good display of what the companies have to offer. I bring a few photos from Oakleys Party Limos to start off with...
Oakleys J910SEH
We start with a simple Dennis Dart which actually remains just as a simple Dennis Dart would be expected to be.
Oakleys M816GFT
Another Dart this time with Marshall bodywork. I must admit I never got to see inside of this one, but the paint work really sparkles!
Oakleys other bus is a Metrobus...

Sunday Best: Western National MW

One of the good things about last weekends bus rally on The Hoe was meeting quite a few regular visitirs to this blog, and there was one recurring theme to my discussions - and that was how popular the Sunday Best feature is, so I will try and keep these up as I have not done so many recently..
