When will Citybus start hitting First by operating on some of its more lucrative routes?
ReplyDeleteBe good if City Bus started to run a service to Wembury as First have cut theirs in the past year or so
ReplyDeleteSo does this sound about right?
ReplyDelete- New 20 is a bit like a weird mish-mash of the old 20/21/22 (Prince Rock -> Woodford -> Mudge Way -> Merrafield)
- New 21 is a copy of the First 12, but extended to Steer Park on all journeys.
- New 22 is the same as the old 51A but turns around at Chaddlewood Roundabout and does the reverse route.
Not sure whether this is a good thing or not, especially with the loss of the Chaddlewood-St Maurice loop. Working at Orange on Sandy Road, having both services going in opposite directions was quite handy, though admittedly I'll be gone from there before these changes come into effect. Though in terms of simplification and absorbing the smaller routes (old 22) these changes seem to be doing their job.
Maybe this is also bringing in a consolidation of route numbers? (2x = North East Plymouth?)
If I were Go Ahead I would not look to be e3xtending into First routes, I would look to sort out their own mess first. First have really improved over the past few years, and I think Go Ahead could have a real battle on their hands if they want to extend the 'bus war' further. EG if they go out to Tavistock or Wembury (can't see te later making any money) then bang would go their monopoly in Whitleigh and Ham for example as First retaliate. Who would lose more??? Go Ahead I would saqy !!!
ReplyDeletelooks like First's 12 has hit hard as the 21 is going to be copy of the route, terminating at Steer Park instead of Chaddlewood, operating at every 10 minutes instead of 12. All at the expense of the 51 which no longer goes direct to town. this takes the slow road, through Lispon Vale and North Hill. And the new 20 means user from Underlane get the pleasure of spending an extra 20+ minutes on the bus to get to town....but they do get 3 buses an hour
ReplyDeleteDon't underestimte Go-Ahead. They have plenty of experience of dealing with competitive threats to their services, including threats from the big companies such as Stagecoach and First.
ReplyDeleteYou only have to look to Oxford where The Oxford Bus Company and Stagecoach in Oxfordshire have competed on a head-to-head basis for many years. Go-Ahead saw off Stagecoach following their incursion onto OBC's flagship X3 route from Oxford to Abingdon, and both companies have competed fiercely on the bus corridor to Blackbird Leys.
If First maintain their level of competition on PCB's intra-urban services, I wouldn't be surprised if First's services to Tavistock become a target for Go-Ahead?
with regard to the last post, yes they have success some places but like all the other big companies they have there problems look at wilts and dorset for example
