It does seem that Plymouth is doing quite well in attracting top architects to its bigger projects at the moment. Plymouth City Council has just announced that Internationally renowned architects, Fielden Clegg Bradley Architects, who were voted Education Architects of the year in 2005, are part of the design team for the new Estover Campus. They have put together initial designs for a campus aimed at creating a whole new community feel in the heart of Estover.
The £34 million campus will be home to the Estover Community College, Estover Primary School, Estover Library and Estover Youth Centre and it is hoped the new look campus will inspire and innovate through its buildings as well as the facilities and staff within it.
This comes in the same week as A 'radical' new £50 million hospital is planned for Plymouth to treat both NHS and private patients. The independent hospital, which will be known as a centre of clinical excellence, will be based on a two hectare site at the Plymouth Medical and Technology Park and give city patients the choice of where they want to be treated. This will be designed by world-renowned architects Foster + Partners, who are famed for creating buildings such as the Swiss Re 'Gherkin' and the British Museum in London, and are part of the design team for the rebuild of the World Trade Center in New York.
I am sure I will come back to these developments in more detail later but it is a good sign that Plymouth is getting quality architecture on at least some of its major projects. I will be having a bit of a Architecture theme all this week so more to follow!
