Available Tool

Increasing fares has been a time-honoured remedy—and there’s plenty of that about at the moment. It didn’t work in the 1970s but in the face of sharply escalating fuel bills, there seems no other readily available tool.

A quote from another excellent blog post on Omnibuses (required daily reading)

With perfect timing I then find this on First Devon and Cornwall website:

Changes to fares and tickets in Plymouth & South Devon from Sunday 9th December 2007

Changes to fares and tickets in Plymouth & South Devon from Sunday 9th December 2007
Adult Singles and Day Returns
Fares up to £1.20 will generally change by 5p
Fares between £1.30 and £2.20 will generally change by 10p
Fares between £2.30 and £2.40 will change by 15p
Fares between £2.40 and £4.00 will generally change by 20p
Fares over £4.00 will change by 20p/30p
Child Singles and Day Return fares will change in line with the revised adult fares
First Day Plymouth tickets
The new price for the adult FirstDayPlymouth ticket will be £3.00 and the price for the child ticket will be £2.10. The adult FirstDay Plymouth Plus ticket will remain at £4.00 and the child at £2.60. (Please refer to our website for zone maps for both these tickets)

Other season ticket prices are also increasing as you would expect.

Of course some fares only recently went down on the X80 between Plymouth and Ivybridge (17th November) but I am not sure if these are now also being revised upwards?

Fare in Cirnwall and North Devon actually go up from this weekend so Plymouth seems to be getting and extra week at the older prices.

There is one oddity which I cant quite figure about the day tickets on offer:

FirstDay Devon ticket

The adult FirstDay Devon ticket will remain at £6.00 and the childs at £4.00. The ticket is valid for travel on ALL First buses in Cornwall and Devon and can be purchased from the driver. It is available at any time of the day.

First Day Cornwall tickets

The new price for the adult FirstDay Cornwall ticket will be £5.80 and the price for the child ticket will be £4.00. The ticket will be valid for travel on ALL First buses in Cornwall and Devon and can be purchased from the driver. It is available at any time of the day.

It seems that the First Day Ticket in Cornwall is 20p cheaper than the same in Devon - but both tickers are valid throughout Devon and Cornwall? So can we buy a First Day Cornwall ticket and use that?
