Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery is appealing for contributions towards an exhibition celebrating the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Great Western Docks at Millbay. The museum is planning the exhibition, which will tell the story of the docks, from January 27 until March 24 next year. It also hopes to publish an illustrated commemorative booklet later in 2007.
Millbay Docks were the city's first purpose-built commercial steamship facilities, and enjoyed direct links to the South Devon Railway at nearby Millbay Station. Prior to this the site was home to Plymouth's medieval town mills; an important harbour during the Civil War 'Siege of Plymouth' and the location of Plymouth's first purpose-built military prison
This is Plymouth.
